Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall
This place has a fair selection of stores, from Best Buy to K-Mart to a lot of smaller ones. It's nice to just go and hang out with some friends at, though there can be a few rough spots with so many teenagers. I believe there was a large brawl here about a month or two ago, but you'd never be able to tell from just going there and visiting-it seems like a very friendly, easygoing environment. I'd recommend this place. If you can't find something here, there's always the South Hills mall but a stones throw away.
Godiva Chocolatier
The mall itself is excellent, with a wide variety of book stores, restaurants, and various other conveniences. Some of the patrons and employees here can give off a less than friendly (i.e. arrogant/ditzy) attitude, but it's overlookable. Lots of teenagers running around, can detract from the overall shopping experience, but then again, if you are a teenager, might be a good place to meet someone your own age. Prices are in the higher end, but it's Westchester, what do you expect?
L Bs Ice Cream Stand
This small booth is a great place to stop by if you're just cruising around on a weekend night. The prices are a little on the higher end, but are still fair. The quality of the ice cream itself is fairly good, and the server is nice and professional. The 84 Diner is right nearby, too, making this place an excellent stop for desert on your way out.
Picture People
The staff is sufficiently knowledgable for the average person, though it might not be enough for a professional or aspiring professional. The variety of equipment and goods are the same. I haven't been to many camera stores to compare, but the prices are slightly on the high side, though not significantly. If you need something for your camera and this place is closer to you than Walmart, I'd recommend it. After all, if you can't find what you're looking for here, you can always try Best Buy which is within walking distance.
Regal Poughkeepsie Cinema
As one can expect, the food is overpriced, but barring that since it's standard for a theatre, I found this to be an excellent place for the family. The screens are fairly sized, the seats are comfortable, and the staff has no qualms about quieting someone down if you notify them. It's a generally friendly area, though, so problems of chatter are sparse. This also helps when waiting on the longer lines on a weekend night-it's not uncommon to just strike up a pleasant conversation with the person next to you without appearing awkward.
At Home In The Woods
It's a nice place if you want to pick up a new table or couch, but I'd probably go to a larger place if I were looking to buy a new dining room set or something of a larger scale. The help is pretty friendly, and can always either answer your question or direct you to someone who can (the latter can be a little inconvenient if you're in a rush, but if you're shopping for furniture, you shouldn't be in a rush anyways). It's in a convenient location, though it might not be so easy to get the furniture to your car as it's in a mall, but the staff can help you out with that.
Riccis Barber Shop
Very convenient location-grab some coffee from Starbucks from next door, or lunch at Bachus, then get a haircut. Very nice when you have a series of errands to do and you have to figure out what order to do them in, this will almost never throw you out of your way. The place itself is a bit small, but with good service in terms of quality, price, and friendliness.
Westchester Broadway Dinner
This is an excellent place to take your family to. The production values might not be what you'd find in larger theatres, but it's still a great place to enjoy a lovely local production enjoyable by the whole family. The acting (and singing, when applicable) is good enough to enjoy, though the occassional actor or actress will astound you with either why they're not leading on Broadway, or how they made it past the auditions. It's a rather mixed bag, but everything comes together well.
Gold's Gym
There's a fair variety of exercise machines, though Fishkill All Sports has larger and more extensive facilities (Golds Gym is located in a shopping center). There's a very pleasant ambience to work out in thoguh-at least for my tastes, some people enjoy the "cold prison" look a bit more when working out. But the staff, for the most part, is sufficiently friendly, though not especially so, and the location is rather convenient, being next to a few food places (none of which are particularly healthy, but they sell a healthier selection of foods at the gym). There's a satisfactory martial arts school right next door, as well, so if you had trouble finding time to work out because of kids, just leave them at the martial arts class, go next door, and work out for forty five minutes.
Dutchess Park Barber Shop
This place reminds me of the older barber shops for some reason-perhaps it's simply that my mother took me to the modern women's hair salons as a child, though. Regardless, the barber does a clean job, and the location is in the middle of a decent shopping strip, so you can grab lunch, run your errands, and get your hair done without much inconvenience or driving all over town.
