Hollywood Express is a pretentious video store. They sort movies by director, for instance. Now, this can be a great thing when you're only looking for movies by David Lynch, but if you're just looking for a regular movie, you may have a hard time. It's esoteric collection is nice on occasion. What's terrible is its late fee policy. Upon joining Hollywood Express, you must give them a credit card number. Then, for every day your movie is late, they charge that credit card the full rental price of the movie. Let's say "Twin Peaks: Season One" is three days overdue. The cost of your rental just went up to about $18.
PROS: Nice esoteric selection
CONS: Small collection of "regular" movies, draconian late-fee policy
The Wine Press has won all sorts of awards from local magazines and such for being a great liquor store. And yes, they sell a lot of wine. Some of the wine is inexpensive but most is not. The Wine Press sells beer and liquor and, occassionally, you can get a good deal on a bottle of Bacardi. But in general, the staff is rude and unhelpful and the wine is overpriced.
PROS: Occassional deals on Bacardi
CONS: Rude staff, overpriced wine,
Of course Windsor Button sells more than just buttons. It's a full craft store with lots of fun little trinkets for making crafts. This is a very cute store with a lot of things to offer. They also sell these fancy teddy bears that are collector items. But their great array of buttons and fabrics is what really draws you in.
Most things I've bought from Tellos have fallen apart. But while they lasted, they were hot! This is definitely the place to buy sexy, fun, outrageous clothes that you'll wear a few times until they go out of style or disintegrate. Same goes for their shoes and racy undies. But they also sell some work-appropriate clothes that are pretty good quality. I have a suit jacket from here that's lasted me many months now. Definitely recommended!
Condom World is more of a gift shop than a sex shop. Yes, they certaintly sell vibrators, dildos and a LOT of condoms. But they also sell sex organ ice cube trays and decorations with boobs on them. Ideal for a bachelor or bachelorette party, or even a birthday party for a randy friend!
If you're looking for a particular CD or DVD and you don't want to spend a lot of money (or pirate it) this store may carry it. There are a number of great deals to be had here. The used CDs come very cheap and they're good quality. The store also sells a lot of random, funny little t-shirts and the like.
This store is great. Everything in it contains hemp! (Yes it's all legal.) The Hempest carries clothes for women and men, and some of them are really cute! The store also sells organic body products. Sheet sets, pillow covers, even furniture all created from hemp! This is truly an original store.
PROS: Everything's made with hemp!
Thom Brown has the cutest, trendiest shoes on Newbury Street (well, maybe it's a tie with Jasmine Sola's shoe store). The set up is a little strange, with two small shops, unconnected, just a few feet away from each other. But whatever, it's fabulous. If you're looking for fun, funky shoes and accessories (they have great handbags too) then Thom Brown is your place. The prices are steep but they have great sales.
PROS: Hot shoes, bags
CONS: Prices on the steep side
Mayan Weavers has a wonderful selection of beautiful jewelry, decorative pieces, tapestries and the like. If you're searching for a lovely, unique piece of jewelry, this is a good place to start. The prices vary, with some things being pretty cheap and others quite expensive. The salespeople were a little pushy and the prices for the things I wanted to buy were steep, but I would recommend this place as a great find.
PROS: lovely selection
CONS: salespeople a little pushy, some items are quite pricey
Probably the best thing I can say about Twilight Hair Salon is its late hours- it's open till 10 p.m. most week nights! And yes, they take walk ins. This tiny little salon is a sight to behold, with its brightly painted facade and interior. It's actually a fun place to get your hair done. Be warned, it's not cheap. It's not egregiously expensive or anything like that, but it's a splurge for a girl on a budget.
PROS: Great stylists, fun atmosphere
CONS: on the pricey side
