Downey Florist

Downey, CA Florists 08/05/05: 'Yikes!!! A tiny florist, with very little stuff for sale'

Downey Florist is in a tiny strip mall. Parking is right in front of the store and fairly accessible. The store is very tiny, and doesnt seem to have much flowers or stock. What they did have was overpriced. The flowers we did buy once, did not seem to last vey long, even though we followed their instructions. I would not go back again.

PROS: Convenient location right on Florence....
CONS: Not very many items for sale, a little overpriced

Pets Plus

Downey, CA Pet Supplies & Accessories 08/05/05: 'Some knowledgeable staff, but very pricey'

Pets Plus is like one of those old mom & pop pet stores, much smaller than say your Petco. Parking is kind of hard to get to, in a narrow lot behind the store. THe employees are pretty friendly and seemed to be more knowledgeable than say your average PETco worker. My only complaint is prices. Everything is very, very expensive. They offer coupons for $1 off that they mail to you, but there are so many restrictions on the coupons (cannot be used on dog food or cat food) that they are ridiculous.

PROS: Friendly, knowledgeable employees
CONS: Very expensive

North Downey Pet Clinic

Downey, CA Animal Hospitals 07/26/05: 'Go here if you want bad service, wrong treatment, and high prices'

I have been here several times as it is convenient to where I live and parking is ample. But they kept misdiagnosing my poor dog. They kept saying he had all these exotic skin problems and perscribing expensive medicine, but it woudnt get better. The assistants and vets are scary, and were rough with my poor dog (hes only 22 lbs). He was terrified and they had to put him under to do several tests on him. Also, the receptionist is rude and unpleasant. They charged a lot, and I was always left with a slimy feeling after dealing with them. We finally got fed up and went to much farther vet that was recommended by a friend, VCA Animal Hospital in Santa fe Springs. What a difference. No pressure to buy useless products and have useless procedures from VCA. It turns out my dog just had common allergy, and the VCA Dr said to try a little over the counter benadryl. It worked! I will never go back to North Downey Pet Clinic again.

PROS: convenient location if you live in Downey
CONS: Slimy and clueless veterinarians and rude staff, they are just after your $

Vca La Mirada Animal Hosp

We have taken our dogs and cats 2 of each) to see Dr. Shiringo many times. Overall we are pleased with his services. He is loving with the animals and doesnt try to sell us unecessary stuff that some vets do. The office space is small, so its sometimes hard to keep my dogs away from other unknown animals. Also, its usually crowded. Maybe they are overbooking? or maybe its emergencies coming up, not sure. But those are my only complaints. The staff is generally pretty decent, but some of them move very slowly. Overall, I say they are an honest and knowledgeable vet center.

PROS: good vet, doesnt try to sell stuff, very honest
CONS: too long waits, small waiting area

Pete's Tailor Shop

Downey, CA Tailoring 07/26/05: 'Good tailor, friendly and quick work'

I like this tailor. His work is not cheap, but decent priced and good. For example, I just dropped off 2 pants w/cuffs, 3 boys pants, and the sleeves on 2 suit jackets to be hemmed all for $65. Parking is ample, although getting out of the parking lot onto Lakewood can be tricky at rush hour. The owner is usually friendly and while not the quickest, takes about 1 week usually. Overall they are good and I recommend them.

PROS: Decent work, friendly, average prices
CONS: Not the quickest

Downey Tailors

Downey, CA Tailoring 07/26/05: 'The "grouchy tailor"....'

I have to start by saying this guy is VERY proficient in his field. His work is almost always perfect. Once, he cut sleeves too short and had to lengthen it, but besides that his work is good. The problem is, he is grouchy all the time. My husband and I toss coins to see who has to go pick up or drop off the clothes, because neither of us wants to deal with him. I can't remember specifics, but I do know that he ALWAYS snaps at customers, or speaks harshly to them or says something gruff to them. My husbands notices it too, so its not just me. We call him "the grouchy tailor" around here. In fact, we have started taking our stuff to Petes Tailor on Lakewood. He is awesome and a little cheaper than Downey Tailors.

PROS: Proficient tailor
CONS: Grouchy and prices are higher than other places

Happy Nail Of La Habra

La Habra, CA Nail Salons 07/26/05: 'If you want a quickie nail job, this place is for you'

This is one of those new nail places that has tons of stations and workers, all doing nails only. It is easy to find, right of Beach near the Sams Club. Parking is right in front of the store. There is very short waits, since there are so many employees. But it is very crowded, and noisy and smelly (nail polish smell seemed stronger than other salons). They did the whole pedicure in like 30 minutes, without a massage. I am used to the whole 1.5 hour pedicure deal that I get at salons. The job was decent, but it really is an "in and out" type of place.

PROS: Quick
CONS: Quick (if you want leisurely and relaxing, this is not for you)

Hollywood Birth Ctr (Now Sacred Entrance)

Los Angeles, CA Doctors - Misc 07/26/05: 'Love them! The doulas and midwives are awesome!'

I cant mention names here because of the rules, but everyone that works at the Birth Center is so knowlegeable and warm, you will truly feel comfortable for your whole maternity and birth experience. I had my first child in a hospital, Whittier Presbyterian, what a nightmare!! For my second, in Januaryh 2005, I went with Hollywood Birth Center. The difference was amazing. They spend a lot of time at each prenatal visit going over every aspect of your pregnancy and answering your questions (over 1 hour visit, while my Dr used to rush me out in 10 mintues after a 45 minute wait). They came to me at home for the delivery (that is an option, but prenatals were at the center). They set up the water tub and the doulas helped me through the labor. The music was soothing and lights were low. I felt so much less pain, because I was relaxed and confident. My daughter was born only 45 minutes after I got in the tub. After the birth, I had some somewhat serious issues, with a lot of bleeding. But they were able to handle that with their skill and expertise. Visit them, you will have no regrets and end up with the best birth experience you could have hoped for. Prices are reasonable, it was about $3,800 which included all the prenatal visits, home birth, and several HOME visits after the baby is born to check on you and the baby.

PROS: Extremely knowledgeable staff, caring and supportive. Reasonable rates
CONS: Traffic in Hollywood is a pain, but there is traffic everywhere in LA

Red The Hair Studio

Whittier, CA Beauty Salons 07/26/05: 'Pricey, but decent cuts....'

This is a small salon. The parking is horrible...street parking only in uptown whittier. Once you get in, there is kind of a family atmosphere. Doesnt seem to be many assistants working as there is usually hair on the floor all over. It is a very casualy atmosphere, but prices are steep despite this ($45 for a haircut from certain stylists). They do a great job, though most of the time. What I really hate is there is a big old folding table in the middle of the salon, and all the stylists on break sit there eating their lunch. While I understand they need to eat, the management should have thought of this and provided them with a breakroom so customers wouldn't have to stare at them eating and yakking while you are tyring to relax and get your hair cut.

PROS: Good hair cuts...
CONS: Pricey, considering it is so casual inside. Big lunch table in salon.
