Building contractors and home improvement types will love this place. They spare items from the landfill and sell used building supplies, most of them salvaged items rescued before demolition. If you are not sure what to use, they have consultants that will help you decide which windows, doors, bricks, hard wood flooring or other items are right for your building project. If you are about to demolish a building, they can help strip that and resell the items, which you can then deduct on your taxes. Saving the earth is worth a little time, isn't it?
PROS: You can get top of the line items for cheaper than Home Depot
CONS: You might have to drive a little farther and spend time looking
In beautiful downtown Burlingame sits a spa worth visiting. This is first class, a spa for when you really want some pampering. The brazilian wax special is perfect for before a bikini vacation, but I've tried the massage special. I almost forget I am less than a mile from home, and leave feeling refreshed every time. They also offer specials for facials, including dermabrasion services. A selection of products are available to continue your pampering at home. The prices are not bad for what you are getting, but I always hold out for the special deals.
Many kids sit still for hours at desks, then come home and sit some more at video games and television. Well this place has a soloution. In an era where you can't even trust your kid alone in the yard, Fitwize 4 Kids offers an alternative where they can run, play and work out. Kids ages 6 through 12 have no class schedules to follow, just size appropriate equipment to work their bodies and their self-esteem. It's a fun way for them to get the heart rate up, even in winter when it cold outside. They even have birthday parties available so their friends can try it too!
PROS: Offers nutrition and fitness training seminars designed for kids
This isn't your usual theatre experience. For one, the building is some 60s mod structure, round with interesting columns around it. It's pretty cool looking. Second, the seats are comfortable, and if you get there early enough there are matinee discounts, even on the weekends. I like that it's not as crowded as the big chain theatres. I don't mind waiting a few weeks to see something, or to check out a small low budget flick here. I'm glad it exists among the multi-plex chain theatres who compete with it.
The Palo Alto Medical foundation has a great reputation, and now it's even easier to get your check ups. They are more than just qualified, they offer same day appointments when needed and have doctors pediatrics and internal medicine se well as general medicine. Dr. Lynch was really friendly with me and didn't rush me out like I sometimes get when I ask detailed questions. If your problem is severe, you have access to all the specialists affiliated with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation system, including many Stanford trained doctors.
PROS: On site lab services so no need to travel for blood tests
CONS: Only open normal business hours, until 6 pm.
This place is built for business, with six busy nail stations and three posh pedicure whirlpools. The pedicure seats are super comfortable, state-of-the-art machines. They have little foot baths at the bottom for total pampering. There are so many nail shades here to choose from also, and one big room fills them all. I got a gift certificate to come here, which was a nice gift! They also offer full waxing services in a private back room, airbrush tanning, skin care treatments, and facials.
PROS: best place to get a pedicure for sure!
CONS: walk-ins are not welcome as they are usually busy
This place has different deals on all types of food, including salads and sandwiches. They have various specials, available anytime. You can get one slice with a 16 oz. soda and a topping for under three dollars, and it's so huge, bigger than the average sized paper plate. The girl asked me if I wanted just one, and I had to laugh. I could barely finish just one!! It was loaded with cheese and had a healthy crust on it too. They are open until 3 am so if you get hungry late night, that is good to know.
PROS: the biggest slice on the block, and free refills on soda too!
Nora has been sewing for years, and her shop is full of custom pillows and cushions designed from scratch. She creates curtains, bedspreads, and other high end designs for those who can afford her. The work is top notch, and she uses the best fillings and fabrics available. Nora isn't just a sewing expert, she is a creative person in general. She loves crafts, cooking, and her own home is decorated with hand crafted items. If you want a designer's touch from a true artist, Nora is worth the money.
PROS: What you get is designed especially for you!!
CONS: Her work is not cheap, a single pillow can cost $100 or more
I was never into cooking, but then I discovered that the right tools make the job more bearable. It's hard to burn dinner if you have a quality pan, and they have pans and more! Everything you can bake or cook with is here, not just knives like the name suggests. I got a small cast iron, pre-seasoned frying pan for under $12, and it was a brand name item! You could pay that much for a cheap K-Mart pan, but no need to with a store like this in town. The staff will also help you buy what you need and is very nice. They do have a knife and scissor sharpening service as well.
PROS: Great deals on cookware
CONS: On street parking only
This is listed as a grocery store. They do sell some snacks, but it's not a grocery at all. This is more a dollar store for Japanese imports. You never know what you'ill find. It fun to browse through the stuff, and many bargains can be had. I found an excellent stainless steel fruit knife with a sheath for only a buck, for example. They sell kitchen items, tools, cleaning supplies, toys, stickers, accessories, and small appliances too. But if you see something you want don't wait! Everything seems to be in a limited supply so when it is gone, it's gone!
PROS: Lots of good deals on kitchen items , tools, and unique things
CONS: Some items are just plastic stuff like containers
