Silverlake Furniture
This store is also known as "Urquiza Isaias." I stopped in to look for a computer desk, which they advertise on their windows. They had one and it looked like a factory reject. I also looked at bedroom sets, and they wobbled. They do carry futons, which may be helpful to someone. They did not have a lot of furniture. While I was there, at no time did anyone ask me if I needed assistance. There was someone in back, but he appeared to be talking on his cell phone.
Moonlight Galleria
This *looks* like it would be a fairly expensive shop because it's presented well, but I have found the prices to be rather affordable. I have found a number of stunning, contemporary necklaces there. They also carry scarves, hats, purses, etc. And there are lots of mirrors about to see how things look.
Daily Pure Water
That's actually a very good price compared to Sparkletts. One can also purchase a membership for $15 that gets you 100 gallons, making the price even better. The only "hook" is that you must either bring or buy your own container. The 2 gallon container was upwards of $12.00. There are also water stands and other containers in assorted designs. The owner is nice and helpful.
Payless Produce Market
This store is a bit like an indoors farmer's market because they have A LOT of produce, some of which isn't carried by the larger grocers. (I swear I saw cacti.) It's all very affordable. They also have a fairly large meat counter that is priced competitively. The shelves carry a basic assortment of foods and sundries. On canned goods, one can find better prices, but if you're they're already, it won't sink what you've saved on the rest. I have found staff helpful.
Souvenirs Of Hollywood
Locals generally avoid the tourist shops, but recently I set about looking for things to add to a gift basket. After hitting A LOT of stores up and down Hollywood Blvd., each carrying the same-old-thing, I found myself at this shop and was duly impressed with the choices. Yes, there are the same-old maps and pictures, but they also have a respectable amount of OTHER, UNIQUE "Hollywood"-themed things. I quite happily found some things to add to my gift basket within my budget, and they will be first choice next time.
Fuego
This shop just opened a few weeks ago, and it's utterly FANTASTIC!!! This is the place to go if you're looking for something super unique for yourself or others. Where to begin: stickers, bathroom gift sets, beaded curtains, books. What I found myself most attracted to were the unique sculptures from recycled materials. The dog on the motorcycle is a hoot, and I'm pretty sure I'll next start collecting their mosaic turtles. It's a little pricey, but it's not your run-of-the-mill schtuff either. I'll not only go back, but it'll be a regular stop for me.
Brite Spot Family Restaurants
Been going to Brite Spot regularly these past couple months. The food is good. They serve family style food, but they have a lot of vegetarian fare on the menu. They ALSO are aware of persons having special dietary needs, like diabetes, and provide Sugar Free syrups and such. It is almost always busy, but seats are quickly available. At 10 pm, they also bring in a DJ. This is quickly becoming a "new" trendy spot in Echo Park despite having been in business since 1947.
Peter Vanstone Inc
This shop doesn't appear to specialize, but it was clean, organized, and I noticed quite a bit of California art on the walls for sale. I also noticed a certain amount of Native American-style pieces. The prices seemed reasonable.
Minnette's Antiques Etcetera
There were some antiques and collectibles in this shop, but there was also a lot of stuff that saw better days at the flea market. Except for the jewelry that was encased, there was no organization to anything. I found a pair of candlesticks from the 70s that were in a color I liked, picked one up to inspect and it had one of the most horrible glue jobs on it I'd ever seen. (Correction: it WAS the worst I'd ever seen.) And it was marked $28. I don't think so. *Someone* might find the thing of their dreams there, but I wouldn't go back.
Peron Antiques & Collectibles
I was impressed most by the fact that they carry "true" collectibles. Among the treasures are antique toys, antique sewing notions (you can even get a scoop of old buttons for $5), and vintage kitchen beaters and flour sifters. I was also impressed by the thematic organization of their items. I didn't find what I was looking for when I stopped in, but I will be back. Meanwhile, I'm thinking up a project for some of those buttons!
