Kern Schools Federal Credit Union

We just joined this credit union in town they have the best rates in comparison to other local credit unions. They do make up for offering the higher savings rates by having some fees that are higher than the other local credit unions so I would suggest you make sure that you dont use their fee services frequently. One thing that I dont like about this credit union is that their branches seem to be sooooo busy all of the time (long lines). Some of their branches lobbies are open on Saturdays, which is nice. They offer all kinds of loans, sell discount theme park tickets, and also sell money orders. They have a free checking option and also offer free online banking/bill pay. We refinanced a loan with this bank and had everything done and left only to have them call us later and tell us they forgot to have us sign something. That was pretty annoying since we had to go back into the bank and sign the papers again.

Cruz Thru Car Wash

Bakersfield, CA Carwashes & Detailing 08/29/06: 'Fast Car Wash'

basic wash its just five bucks! The best part is you dont have to fumble for change or make sure that you have cash because they take credit cards! After you drive through the wash they have high-powered vacuums that you can use for free to vacuum out the interior of your car. They also have a convenient vending area that has items like drying cloths, Armor All wipes, etc. for those last touch-ups on your car. I paid for the medium range wash on my car ($8) that includes a clear-coat protectant and the auto wash did a pretty good job getting my filthy dusty car clean. It even got a lot of the coated on bugs off. I have a little longer car though and so a few soap spots didnt get completely rinsed off on the very back of my car. Easy to enter and exit off of Coffee Road.

Starplex Cinemas Bakersfield Movies 6

Bakersfield, CA Movie Theaters 08/29/06: 'Cheap Place for 2nd Run Movies'

This is a great place to take the entire family to the movies if you are looking for a bargain. They have inexpensive second run movies here. Regular admission is only a dollar and Tuesdays are just fifty-cents! This is the place for budget-minded movie goers. Cleanliness is somewhat lacking (we know a family that has nicknamed this theater "the sticky theater"). Located by Circuit City and across the street from the Mariott Residence Inn.

Polo Villas

Bakersfield, CA House & Apartment Rentals 08/29/06: 'Nice Family Apartments'

This is a relatively new apartment complex that is clean and has some nice features inside. You won't pay huge amounts in rent -- it's about middle of the road or slightly above average. It's in a quiet and safe Northwest neighborhood area. They have two bedroom and one-bedroom loft-style apartments and have outdoor patios or balconies. Everything inside the apartments is designed for very tall people so if you are shorter you will need to get a step-stool to look in the medicine cabinet, reach items in most of the shelving in the cabinets in the kitchen, etc. They did seem to put a little extra into the apartments by installing cabinets that wipe clean and providing hardware on all of the cabinets so babyproofing is easy (some places don't put any hardware on). The apartment complex has a pool and hot tub and clubhouse that is available for private use with a deposit. You are required to pay for monthly television cable (Brighthouse) and high-speed internet (Roadrunner from Brighthouse) because they cannot be "switched off" in your apartment so that makes the required "rent" a little higher (you pay an additional fee for these services up front with your rent each month). You also have to pay for water here in addition to gas/electric. We found that the previous tenants didn't clean very well and neither did the cleaning crew that was supposed to come in and tidy up when we were renting here. It wasn't a total mess, but the backsplash wall area over the stove and the grill to the exhaust fan and under the hood hadn't been washed. There were some minor maintenance needs when we moved in, but they came right out and fixed everything the day we reported it. Sometimes maintenance here was a little slow (not on major items, just minor things that could wait a little bit) when they had a lot to do.

Today Cleaners

Bakersfield, CA Dry Cleaners & Laundries 08/29/06: 'Drive Thru, Next Day Service'

This is a reliable place to get your dry cleaning done. They also do repairs if needed to your clothing. They've got a drive-thru so you can just pull up and hand over your clothes without even having to get out of the car -- makes it very speedy. They can get your clothes cleaned by the next day. You pay a little more here for the convenience of drive-up drop off and next day availablity, but it's not outrageous pricing. We paid $16.75 for a men's suit (jacket and pants) and a tie.

O K Barber Shop

Red Bluff, CA Barbers 08/27/06: 'Very Short Haircuts for Men'

This is the normal old time 1950s barber shop. It is not for people wanting a salon style haircut or something that is more modern in terms of styling. It is a place for an older gentlemen who still wears his Marine Corp style haircut. I have found that in general they cut hair much too short. Their perception of short is different than other places that I have used to get a haircut. If that is the kind of haircut you want, than this is a place you can go to.

Neff Marcia - Excel Eye Ctr Of Orem

This is a good place to find a reliable eye doctor. It isn't too difficult to get in for an eye exam and the staff is nice. There's even an eyeglasses shop in the building if you need some new frames or lenses and they can help you get the most comfortable fit. I specifically saw Dr. Thaurer here and he was very good.

Dave's Boots

We tried out this place to get some expensive men's dress shoes repaired and they did an amazing job resoling them. They did such a good job that you don't even notice that they have been resoled. The repairs have held up very well too so far. We were so pleased that we went back in with a couple other pairs (we have a lot of dress shoes for my husband's work). It is a little pricey, but I think what they charge is fair (and it is certainly less than new shoes and extends the life of your investment in a good pair).

Hazel Tree Florist

This is a nice little florist shop off of Hazel and Madison over by Raleys (its on the Hazel side of the strip mall). They always have something pretty displayed inside. A lot of the local kids from the high schools get their corsages and boutonnieres made here for the formal dances. They always have a big variety of ribbon to match the girls dresses and are good at helping the young men pick out what will look best for their dates (and the girls too). They offer delivery for orders. It can get busy here, as with any florist shop around holidays that tend to be heavier on floral gifts (mothers day or valentines day for sure), so make sure you order in advance. In my experience their flowers always are very fresh and last for quite a while when taken care of.
