Modernica Showroom
Now that mod is trendy, it will cost some cash, but where else can you get furniture that will eventually increase in value. Buy the classics and some new interpretations of the days when LA set the model for architecture and interiors.
PROS: Classic herman miller and case study furniture
CONS: Cost on some items, the changing/removal of the H logo
Fair Oaks Pharmacy & Soda Fntn
Where else can you stop off for all of the drugs that you need at one corner? The pharmacy staff are great, friendly and knowledgeable. An ldeal location to drop by and fill up on all the news, pills, coffee and even a snack.
PROS: Local, friendly and knowledgable service...
CONS: Busy at times, some refill quantities may be lower...
Pelayo's Auto Svc
We found this gem by accident and have been taking our newer and older car here since then. The father and son team have several large contracts with blue chip companies to repair their vehicles too, so don't look past the low key building and at the good servicing...
PROS: Honest opinon and good work
CONS: No rental or loaner cars at this location. Grass roots service.
Swork Coffee
The sidewalk location is excellent, the coffee is too. This is the corner for the neighborhood. A well designed iterior too, play area for the kids and it is still quiet and relaxed in there...
PROS: The best in the eagle rock area
CONS: none, starbucks across the street will stop this neighborhood
House Of Joy Chinese Rstrnt
I mean there was great hopes for a Glassell Park location that would prevent you from the 10 minute trip to Chinatown but this is not it. The food was not good, that simple.
Sorry, no further comment. Save your money.
PROS: None really. Location is good I suppose.
CONS: Bad food. Bad service (the time we went). Just bad.
Bucket
relaxed (too much for parents or visiting relatives) and local bar/restuarant with a meat twist. Burgers are great and the shrimp wrapped in bacon is classic. Just stop by when a relaxing moment is required...
PROS: Beer and Burgers, simple and great quality...
CONS: Not for the suit and tie crowd...but that is not necessarily a bad thing...
Chalet
Go here any day of the week, great crowd and atmosphere. Beer and drinks selection is excellent and service is goof. Weekend and fridays are busy but the wait is never long and always entertaining.
PROS: Great interior, location and local crowd
CONS: outside wait on weekends
Mr Baguette
Can't recommend it enough, great bread and the sandwiches are like not other. Why go to subway or Quiznos? Get some culture and some real coffee at this place. Worth the drive out from downtown.
PROS: Best French Bread and Coffee. Sandwiches are great too.
CONS: Pastries have too much butter...If that is possible...
Crepes On Cole
Get it all on a crepe at this neighborhood staple. The corner is bustling but the inside or outside seating is great on a weekend (busy) but better during the week.
Even the OJ is freshly squeezed and the Chicken Pesto is a must. No frills counter service though for those looking for tablecloths, go across the street.
PROS: Food and quantity
CONS: busy on the weekend
Cole Garage
With the convenient location and the N Judah right there, you can drop off the car for a service or the more serious (lots of clutch/transmission work 'cause of the hills) and then jump onto the MUNI and get to wok without hassle. Dirk (the owner) runs around personally checking all of the work that is done, while Mike (not grumpy, he is seasoned) will tell you the low down on what to do with your car after the service. If he says ditch it then do it without questions.
Great work on all types of cars, I have taken some real pieces of s$%t in there and they always come out better with a honest opinion of the damage.
PROS: Work, Service quality and opinons. Honest as the day is long.
CONS: Busy location, but at least you can get a coffee/baguette
