Summerwood Home Finding Ctr
I live in Summerwood. It's a good place. It's near the lake and has two (artificial?) lakes in the middle of it. It has two community centers, each with pools. Large number of trails for jogging or biking. Several little parks for kids scattered throughout the area. Good mix of big and small houses. Neighborhood association dues are kind of high, as are taxes, but this keeps the quality of the neighborhood high. Overall I am happy to be in Summerwood. Commuting-wise, it is sometimes hard to get onto the 8 from West Lake Houston Parkway (i.e. I have to sit through several lights) but total it is usually 35-40 min to downtown. Sometimes up to an hour if traffic is bad. Overall a fine community.
PROS: Location, prices, schools, children facilities/activities; neighbors
CONS: homeowners dues, taxes, occasional traffic
Becks Prime
This place is in the tunnels and is a very good, quick place to eat. They offer a wide variety of burgers (including a shark burger). Also offered are shakes - which also come in the handy dessert portion (8 oz). The fries are pretty greasy but very good. I think they have the best burgers in Houston. A little pricier than your fast food burger joint, but a nice place for a casual business lunch.
PROS: Good food, location, shakes
CONS: Greasy
Cici's Pizza
If you are looking for a cheap place to take the family, it is hard to beat Cici's Pizza - located near the intersection of 1960 and Atascocita Road. It is better quality than McDonald's or Burger King and you can eat as much as you want. Last time I went, it was pretty cheap - 3.99 or so for an adult buffet. There are dessert pizzas and a wide range of regular pizzas. Probably not the healthiest place in the world, but very good bang for your buck.
PROS: Prices, selection, location
CONS: Lots of kids, unhealthy
Hertz Rent A Car
I have been to this place a couple times (not by my choice - the insurance company directed me here) to get cars. One time the person helping me was so slow that the car I was supposed to get was rented by someone else while I was waiting. At that, the person asked me if I wanted an upgrade at an additional charge since there were none left of the kind I had reserved. Hello? No thanks. I want whatever the insurance company is paying for. The other time I went the staff was more helpful and friendly, but it seems hit and miss. They are also very hard to find - tucked away in the mass of urban sprawl around 1960 and 59.
PROS: close to car repair shops
CONS: service
Rittenhouse Ralph A Md
Ralph Rittenhouse's general family practice is located near the hospital on 59 just south of 1960. He is very old. He is knowledgable but not very personable. His assistant was okay too. I was treated efficiently and sent on my way. However, they did forget to make me a prescription for pain medicine, which I realized later than I really needed. I probably won't go back.
PROS: location
CONS: service
Angelika Film Center
The Angelika Film Center is located downtown. It used to have a cafe attached to it, but that closed down - there are still many places to eat located nearby. The theater specializes in independent and weird movies that other theaters don't want to play so it's kind of interesting. They do have stadium seating, which surprised me, and overall it is pretty well run. You can also get your parking paid for if you take your parking stub up to the movie ticket window. That's kind of nice.
PROS: Selection
CONS: Interesting clientele
Palace Lanes
Palace Lanes is down on Bellaire and has an interesting feel to it. It is very urban, so expect that kind of crowd. Otherwise, there are tons of lanes for classic bowling with normal amenities. There isn't anything really special except that this place is kind of a Houston landmark.
PROS: Many lanes
CONS: location
Kroger Fuel Ctr
Kroger on Atascocita is a fine store, but not up to HEB standards. The prices are a little higher and the selection a little thinner. Well lit though, and plenty of space. If you have a little time, just go up to HEB at 1960 and Atascocita Road. This place isn't quite as good
PROS: Well lit
CONS: prices
Heb Food Stores 498
Alright, maybe it's not the best ever, but it is pretty darn good. Excellent selection, service and clientele. It sometimes gets a little crowded on Saturday, but overall it is the cleanest, most spacious, best-priced grocery store in the area. Highly recommended.
PROS: Price, selection, service
CONS: Crowds
Cold Stone Creamery
This Cold Stone is very close to the Walmart close to Atascocita Road and 1960. I have been there several times and have not been disappointed - good service, good ice cream, an overall treat.
PROS: service; selection
CONS: a little pricey
