Gary Barkus Bakery

Pittsburgh, PA Bakers & Bakeries 09/07/05: 'Gary Barkus Bakery'

Barkus bakery has been a long-standing tradition in my family as far as birthdays go. Simply put, their cakes are fantastic! The icing is smooth and not at all sugary nor too sweet. And If you're not a cake person, they also have a large selection of cookies, brownies, tarts, etc. The prices are about average for a bakery, but the quality of their baked-goods is well worth the money spent.

Sound Advice DJs

Jeannette, PA Disc Jockeys 09/07/05: 'Sound Advice DJs'

This company came highly recommended to me (by several different people) when I was planning my wedding last year. Because I had heard so many glowing reviews about them, we met with them and hired them on the spot! They are a husband and wife who work every event as a team (one controls the music, the other emcees). They are so easy to work with, very accomodating, and definitely keep things moving. Their website alone made the planning process that much easier because of the extensive song catalog--you could log on and check off the "must plays" and "must-not plays." They're prices are very reasonable, too. They were much less expensive (and better) than several other companies we had initially considered--and far less "cheesy" than most djs. Our guests still mention how much fun they had dancing at our wedding (almost a year later)! Definitely worth checking out if you're planning an event.

Heather Designs Incorporated

Bethel Park, PA Florists 08/30/05: 'Heathers Designs Florist'

This is the shop that I used for my wedding flowers last year. It's a small shop, but it is conveniently located on South Park Road in Bethel Park. They were very accommodating and easy to deal with and the prices were incredibly affordable. I didn't exactly get everything I had asked for, but I did get A LOT of compliments on my flowers--actually, I still do any time anyone sees my wedding pictures! They do nice work there and I will definitely use them again in the future.

Molly's Trolleys

Pittsburgh, PA Buses - Charter & Rental 08/30/05: 'Molly's Trolleys'

This is a great company! We used them for our wedding transportation instead of going with the "traditional" limousine. We couldn't have been more pleased and there was enough room on our beautiful trolley for the entire bridal party, parents of the bride and groom, parents of the flower girl and the ring bearer, and there was still some room to spare! The company's event coordinator was a joy to work with and she made things so easy for us. And the price was extremely reasonable! Our entire experience with them was great and the time spent on the trolley the day of the wedding couldn't have been more fun!

Pittsburghs Cathedral Hall

My husband and I had our wedding reception here last year. It used to be my family's church before it closed in the early 1990s. The person who bought the property restored it and turned it into a really special and elegant reception hall. The service was fantastic, the food was incredible, and we really couldn't have been more pleased. Of all the places we considered having our wedding, this was definitely one of the more expensive options, but because it held special meaning to me and my family, we went with it--and we're so glad that we did! Everything was perfect!

Abramson Photography

Pittsburgh, PA Photo Studios 08/30/05: 'Bob Abramson Photography'

My husband and I used this Photographer for our wedding last year. Overall, he does really nice work and his prices are great, but we had several issues with his services--particularly with the length of time it took to receive our wedding album. Initially, it took 8 weeks longer than we were told it would take to get the pictures back, and once we did receive them, the printing of most of them were blurred and/or unacceptable. It took another 6 weeks to have those corrected, and the hassles and inconveniences didn't even end there! We were given lots of excuses and run-around about the delay (and initial poor-quality), but once we did finally receive the finished corrections, the results were beautiful.

Accents In Ink

This is a great place to go for a quality tattoo and to have it done in a very safe and clean environment. The artists are professional, helpful, and extremely talented. The prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the art that is offered. Also conveniently located in Castle Shannon near a PAT trolley stop.

Mancini's Bakery

Mc Kees Rocks, PA Bakers & Bakeries 08/29/05: 'Mancini's Bakery'

Nothing in this world is better than a piece of fresh, warm bread from Mancini's bakery in McKees Rocks. I grew up in a house up the hill from this bakery, and the scent of their baking bread alone was enough to make my mouth water! Their breads (I recommend a twisted loaf) go perfectly with just about any meal, they make great sandwiches, or they can stand alone and make an incredible snack. They have even added a low-carb bread to their menu. After having Mancini's bread, you'll never care to buy any other!

Opeka Auto Repair Co

Canonsburg, PA Auto Repair 08/29/05: 'Opeka Auto Repair'

Not being a particularly auto-savvy person, I never thought I'd ever find an auto repair place that I'd feel completely comfortable with. I often feel concerned about whether I'm getting a fair deal, if certain repairs are completely necessary, or if a problem will be overlooked and I'll be charged a small fortune regardless. After discovering Opeka, however, I no longer feel suspicious of auto repair shops. Every person that I've dealt with there has been nothing but helpful and honest with me. They make things as easy as possible to accommodate their customers, and they keep you in the loop by calling you within just a couple hours (of dropping your car off in their care) to give you a status report/update. Definitely not your "typical" auto repair shop.

Groovy

This store buys and sells toys, collectibles and memorabilia from the past, typically ranging from the 1960s-1990s. Here you can find items specific to your own childhood memories: board games, lunchboxes, action figures, dolls, posters, etc. While it is a fun store to go to poke around in, it's not exactly one that will inspire you to make too many purchases. Many items are over-priced just because they are considered "collectibles." I find much of their selection a little too used or "broken in" to justify the asking prices. Still, if you're looking to replace an item from your childhood, or hoping to get your hands on something that you had always asked Santa for but never got for Christmas, chances are good that you'll find it at Groovy. Definitely worth checking out sometime, if for no other reason than to just relive some memories from days past.
