This is one of the well preserved sites to see if you are near Alexandria, VA. It takes about a 1/2 hour to visit and learn. The children enjoy the pictures on the walls and hearing the station guide teach. They have been very good with little children to make it interesting. The adults in our group enjoyed learning it's history and architecture.
He was our 3rd president and our nation received so much from him. Take your children with you to this monument. They have park rangers who tell his life's achievements. The children learn and enjoy the theatrics in their voice while they look at the large statue of Thomas. For us adults, we enjoyed learning of him and the memorial in full.
This is a wonderful place which is overlooked by to many people. Don't judge a book by it's cover. Every building in Old Town Alexandria is to be keep just that "Old". In fact, it's well known for "if it's not broke, don't fix it" This building as well as others have original glass windows. It was a torpedo factory over 100 years old. Inside it's sectioned for many different types of art displays. Take a walk along the waterfront "Union Street" , stroll through and enjoy all types of art.
Gunston Hall is overlooked since it's further from D.C. If you live in Alexandria or in the Metro area to site see, it's worth the drive time. Their tours are wonderful and the plantation is beautiful any time of the year. Take the time to learn it's place in history and enjoy the scenic view. It's a nice change from the crowds in D.C. More for those who like a stroll in the country.
This is one of the best places I've found in years. It's a large complex with plenty of free parking and a nice drop off area. You can join their gym on a monthly basis or stop in for a one time (pay as you go) work out. But my favorite is the Ice Rink. There is always plenty of supervision and a drug free atmosphere to drop your older children off for a 2 hour skating session. Many other activities. Give them a call and request a schedule of events.
This is the original branch where it all started. It's location is in beautiful historic Old Town Alexandria. Burke & Herbert is the oldest bank in VA. They truly know how to invest your money. Their customer service is outstanding. Some banks give out lolly pops. This branch gives out dog treats. So many people would walk their dogs and bring them in. It's a shame other banks haven't followed in their excellent banking and customer service.
We always had a project going on in our home and Smittys was our second home. Every one is knowledgeable and friendly. They have always had what we were looking for or a suggestion letting us know what to use. Great customer service. I haven't been to any other store where they let you know at the register, the same product is on sale but different maker. It sure is nice to know theyll even help you save. Most stores, the person at the register has no idea whats on sale or a better product to use.
There have been other theaters at a mall which I've enjoyed more. In fact, I've traveled a little further to one of my favorite places. I don't got out just for the Movie it's self, it's to enjoy the movie and my rare night out. They do clean, but not like others. Most of the employees are fine, but younger and it's just a job. type attitude, not rude, but not enough smiles.
This is a wonderful place for a nice night out on the town for a dinner and show. This establishment leans more towards fine dinning, but fun for the family, depending on the live entertainment. It was fun as a child to dress up in our Sunday best, have our meal and watch the Play. As an adult it's nice and quiet and can be a romantic evening. The food is good but the service and shows have been excellent. Call ahead for a reservation and to find out what live entertainment is arranged.
Whether you are local or from out of town, don't try and see it all in one day. There are many exhibits and you could see everything in a day, but it's exhausting (with little hills). Since the zoo entrance is Free and parking only $5.00 it's very affordable to come again and again. I believe the best time is mid morning. Most of the animals have eaten and are out. If you plan ahead and let children know you'll be coming back, you can truly take it easy and learn much more.
