This place is not worth it. The staff is extremely pushy--they do not seem to be very good at taking no for an answer. The acupuncturist was not helpful and once looked in my purse and saw that I had allergy medicine and told me to stop taking it! They raised their prices without telling me until I was already in the middle of an acupuncture session. Also, they are not polite there and have continued to call me for over 2 months after I last saw them to try and schedule appointments (when I told them I did not want to return).
This is such a neat place to go into! It's owned and run by Book People, but it specializes in feminist literature and work done and pertaining to women. They have a great selection and often have really prestigious guest speakers and book signers. It fills a niche that would otherwise not be addressed.
Children's Medical Center is simply wonderful for meeting the medical needs of children. First of all, the hospital is so kid-friendly, with a giant model railroad, wagons (instead of wheelchairs) and brightly colored halls. Second, the doctors are excellent and very nice to kids. Finally, they're close to several medical facilities and they are reasonably priced.
I'd sooner drive twice as far away than go back to TMC! They have been harassing me for years about a medical bill for a time when I was in the ER, where they performed medical procedures after I told them not to! They also have been the subject of a major class action lawsuit recently, because they were overbilling under and uninsured people--by about 33%! The staff was terrible--rude and apathetic, and they didn't do anything when I went. Also, they sent me three sets of bills for the SAME procedure--one from the doctor, one from them, and one from the lab (but it was for one thing--a lab test!).
I Luv Video is a great alternative to Blockbuster or other national chains--they have a great selection, they're inexpensive, and it's locally-owned. Check out their international film collection--it's excellent. Also, the staff picks are fun and tend to be really good.
Tape Lenders is a gay-friendly video store, and they carry a lot more than just videos. It's fun to look around--they've got all kinds of memorabilia and gay-friendly literature, t-shirts, and other collectibles. It's really cool inside.
Book People is such a neat bookstore! Check out the newspaper listings--they frequently have really great guests (like Maya Angelou!), and they have a great selection. It's also got a really neat atmosphere, with tons of places to sit and read and a really nice staff.
The Austin Neurological Clinic was a place I went to and had a terrible experience with. They improperly filed my insurance information, then harassed me repeatedly with collections, even after I returned their calls, wrote to them, and tried to work with them. They billed me for a doctor's visit, even though the person whom I was seen by wasn't a doctor, but a college student!
Cigarettes Cheaper is only slightly cheaper than most places, but what makes it worthwhile is that they have an excellent selection. They carry many hard-to-find products and the staff tends to be very knowledgable about the things they carry.
Condoms to Go is a condom and "novelty" store that sells a lot of fun and interesting things, especially if you're looking for a great gag gift. They have a large selection and the salespeople are pretty nice, and you can find all kinds of fun items, from edible body paint to the "World's Smallest Condom." A little pricey, but fun.
