Jays has been around on Long Island forever. They have survived the rush of big chain stores and are still around too which is amazing. They do that because their prices are low, or I should say rather competitive with the major chains. The best part is that their staff is available, helpful, and honest. When you go into a Best Buy, if you are lucky to find a salesperson, they are usually not that knowledgable. At Jays, the sales staff is abundant, well trained in all their products, and doesnt hassle you. They have always had a very good selection of products, especially appliances for your kitchen, but they also carry other items like TV's. Highly recommended.
PROS: Prices are good, staff is very helpful
Old Westbury Gardens is a great place to go regardless of the season, as the place is immaculately maintained all year round. Spring and Fall are my favorities, with the wide array of lush flowers. The gardens are the perfect place for a big event, like a wedding. I especially like the peace and quiet you get from walking around, its a home away from home. The staff is very helpful if you have questions about the botanical aspects of the gardens, as they are well edcuated in the different times of flaura and fauna throughout. Highly recommened for a peaceful visit to get away from the world!
PROS: Gorgeous gardens, helpful staff
I went here a few times, and thought it was just wonderful. The exhbits are facinating, all dealing with the whaling industry on Long Island over the years. Its a real special place for all you Moby Dick fans too! The town of Cold Spring Harbour is great too, as the museum is located right in the heart of the town. This is a great place for children, and even adults, as some of the exhbiits are hands on and interactive. The museum is clean, well maintained, and the staff is very friendly. I remember parking can be a bit difficult, but its such a quaint town, you will find a place eventually.
PROS: Great location, fascinating exhibits
Vanderbuilt is breathtaking. The property it sits on is just so well manicured and maintainted, what a beautiful place to visit. The planetarium is first class, equivalent to larger planetarium in big cities. They have laser light shows sometimes on the weekend synced to music, which is a special treat as well. The staff is always friendly and helpful, parking is abundant, the exhibits are world class, and the inside is very clean. Again, I cant say enough about the planetarium, we are blessed to have a facility of this type so close to home. Highly recommended.
PROS: Awesome planetarium, laser light shows, well maintained
I played this course once a few months back over the summer and found it to be very decent for what its worth. It was well mainted, somewhat challanging, the staff was friendly and helpful, and it was rather pretty. The fees were very low as it is a municipal golf course. The clubhouse was fair, with a snack bar, golf shop, and rental station. We went on a weekend, and it was fairly busy but not over the top. Overall, it was a nice day and a very nice place for a cheap day of golf.
PROS: Well maintained, friendly staff, all the amenities
CONS: A little crowded
I used Yucatan once, not sure why I did as I am totally against tanning salons, but I found the experience to be pleasurable. The staff was very friendly, and answered all my questions thoroughly as I certainly had plenty of them. The place was very clean and well maintained, and their equipment appeared to be modern. Their prices were high though, although I did get a very nice base tan. I would not go back as I think the idea of sitting in a tanning bed is crazy, just asking for major health problems down the road, but if you are into this, Yucatan is a good place to go.
PROS: Modern, friendly staff, well maintained
CONS: High prices
I went to Maple a few times in the past for my monthly haircut. Their stylists are very knowledgable and experienced from what I could tell. I got a very nice haircut each time. The part I liked most was that their stylists helped me out with haircare products for my thinning hair. There were not pushy in trying to sell me something, but rather, evaluated my needs and found some good stuff that I continue to use. Their prices are rather compettive, and there is not a huge wait to get an appointment.
PROS: Friendly, very helpful stylists, low costs
Nardy Honda is an enormous Honda dealership in Suffolk. I went in there looking for a new car a few weeks ago, just to browse, and their salespeople were not pushy and rather honest in my opinion. I got a decent test drive, no hassles, and a friendly dealer. They had a very big selection of cars, and their service department looked rather respectable. I did not buy a car from them as I decided I did not want a Honda, but I would say they are one of the better Honda dealerships on Long Island. There are some out there that are just downright scary.
PROS: Friendly, no hassles, honest
I had to rent a car a few weeks ago as my car was in the shop and needed something for a few days that was inexpensive. I found Port Motors in the phone book and called them to find their prices a lot lower than the big car rental chains. The only downside is that the cars a little older and not as well maintained, but for the money it was fine. The service people were very friendly and the entire process was rather painless.
PROS: Very good prices on cars, cheaper than the chains
CONS: Older cars
My 2 year old pug was rather sick one day, probably because he ate something he shouldnt have. Anyway, I heard Lori from a friend at work and called her and she actually came to the house to take care of my dog, instead of making me bring him to her. Very cool. She was very effecient and thorough and gave my dog some medications to make him feel better. He was better in 2 days and his normal self again. Her fees were not exorbitant either which was a change, pet care can be very expensive. I was very pleased with the outcome!
PROS: Came to the house, decent fees, very good with dogs
