Restaurant used to be Mitch's Cranberry Cafe with so-so food, so-so decor, so-so service. We visited once in awhile when in the area visiting family, but were never very impressed.
What a surprise to discover a few months ago that it sported a campy, new facade which prompted us to try it again. After the first visit we were totally won over --- the food was fabulous! The staff is faster than a speeding bullet and their friendly helpfulness doesn't diminish when the place is packed. The restaurant is cleaner, brighter, 'happier' ---
an altogether lovely dining experience.
Located right on one of the main streets in the village of Vandercook Lake; easy to find; adequate parking. We've never had a mediocre meal here, and have driven up (over 30 minutes) just to eat here even when we have no plans to see relatives or friends.
PROS: Better food than most restaurants in the city of Jackson north of here.
CONS: Tiki-style decor might be a bit cheesy, but not offensive.
Vandercook Lake's only florist -- a small business with a bigger selection of posies and gifts than some larger stores.
I've stopped in here often while in the area visiting family members or driving up from my home in Calhoun County to see friends at the hospital in Jackson , and have always been able to find a nice plant or gift for a reasonable price --- much better on the pocketbook than buying at the hospital gift shop or a larger florist in Jackson!
Staff is helpful and friendly, too.
I attended school with Mr. Weatherwax' kids, and have used this pharmacy for over 45 years; 'way back before they built a much larger drug store across the street from their old location. Prices are comparable to the chain pharmacies, and the service is friendlier. They have a drive-through prescription pickup at the new building; a real time-saver for folks with a busy lifestyle. They also have a much larger parking area than before.
I like to browse while waiting for my prescriptions to be filled, and they have just about everything from cosmetics to toys; from grocery items to clothing!
The best thing I can say about this business is that they will gladly fix your glasses for you if a lens pops out -- as I had to do many times after I bought my first (and only) pair of glasses from them.
If you're on a fixed income and your insurance isn't too good, you may want to think twice about getting your glasses or contacts here. I found the price 'way too high --- should have done more comparison shopping before I went here.
They're conveniently located on the main street, and parking is no problem. Good selection of frames, but beware the rather pushy saleswoman who steers you toward the higher priced ones.
My grandchildren and I can spend hours in here! Whether you're searching for collectible comics, that old comic book you remember from your childhood, the latest issues, or a good paperback mystery or sci fi, you'll find it here. Also has a good assortment of comics-related toys and memorabilia. Great prices! Be prepared to get so engrossed that you'll miss your lunch date!
The store is right on the main avenue with metered parking on the street or plenty of public parking facilities nearby.
After many years visiting doctors, clinics, chiropractors, and hospitals searching for relief from the hideous facial pain of tic douloureux I finally found Dr. Wald, and have been pain-free for nearly a year! Can't say enough good things about him! Personable, caring, professional, and doesn't rush you out of his office as if he can't wait to get to the next patient, as so many doctors do today.
Pleasant waiting room with a more varied assortment of reading material than most, and a large aquarium full of colorful and exotic fish built into one wall! Makes it very restful if the wait is lengthy, which doesn't happen often.
His office is inside a large hospital with a convenient lab and pharmacy right there, so no need to drive all over town for your meds or for any testing you might need. Ample parking, too.
Howards has been in business in downtown Jackson for over 30 years. I've always bought wild bird seed and treats for our cats here, and even though we moved 40 minutes south of town several years ago I still stop in whenever I'm up that way. (I love the smell of the place -- reminds me of the barn at haying time on the farm where I grew up.) Prices are reasonable.
My kids loved visiting here when they were young; lots of chicks, ducklings, bunnies, etc in season. The staff is incredibly helpful in toting heavy sacks out to your vehicle, and loading them into your trunk.
The only drawback is the parking. The lot is small, and getting out on the busy thoroughfare is sometimes tricky. They are close to several public parking lots, though; and there is metered parking on the street.
Thousands of wonderful gifts and home decor items right across the street from the best toy shop in Jackson! You can finish all your holiday shopping without going out of town or to the busy malls! No matter how many times I visit this place there is always something new to see, and I love all the little rooms and tucked-away areas that just seem to pop up and surprise me whenever I'm there. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the merchandise. No tacky items here! A helpful and knowledgeable sales staff never seem to lose patience even when swamped with customers.
I haven't visited the attached tea room/coffee shop yet, but it's very pretty and seems very cozy -- always filled with shoppers who want to grab a bite and rest a bit, so I'm assuming the food is good. (Anna also sells a wide variety of special coffees & teas in the gift shop.) Parking is adequate, but I've often left my car in the Toy House parking lot after shopping there, and run over to see what's new at Anna's!
I was satisfied with the care they gave my youngest granddaughter over the summer. We enrolled her primarily so that she could interact with other children, and I felt that she was adequately prepared for full-time preschool by the time she finished here.
The one-storey building is large enough for the enrollment with separate areas for learning activities, play, snack/lunch times, and rest. The fenced-in outdoor play area has a large sandpit, lots of trikes, balls, and other gear for the children.
The teacher and her assistants were knowledgeable; caring, but firm when they needed to be.
The only problem I had was not knowing up front about the "Good-bye" ritual. I had promised my granddaughter I'd be waiting in the parking lot for her, but they insisted on having me drive away, and wave to the child while driving past the large picture window. I came to understand how this helps the child to eventually overcome separation anxiety, but my granddaughter and I were not prepared, so the first day was rather traumatic.
I have savings and checking accounts here, and have always received good service from every one of the bank's personnel I've dealt with, but the primary reason hubby and I have stayed with Standard Federal (name has changed to LaSalle Bank recently) is that you couldn't ask for more helpful service for mortgages! Nothing is left to chance; no document unexplained; professional and friendly throughout the entire process. There are lots of banks to choose from much closer to where we live now, but we don't mind driving 40 minutes further for such great service!
