This painter has 30 years' of experience in interior and exterior work and specialty painting jobs. He offers free estimates and his work is outstanding -- he uses top-quality products and is meticulous about every aspect of a job. His prices -- offered as bids or on a by-the-hour basis -- are very reasonable, too.
This tax service has a small storefront with only a few tax preparers, but the service is outstanding. They offer very fast turnaround even during the busiest part of the tax season and they are very friendly. They can handle complex returns and will do extensive research to be sure you're getting all the deductions that you deserve.
Champaign-Urbana does not have a huge selection of good appliance repairmen, but this is one of the best. The owner stocks most parts on his truck, so there's seldom an extra trip or long wait required for a repair. He's very reliable -- he shows up when he says he will -- and his prices are reasonable.
This small shop offers expert body work at very fair prices. The owner will go to great lengths to save you money by finding used parts and customizing them and repainting them for your car. The turnaround time is fairly fast, the staff is friendly and they are very careful about storing your auto.
This business has a reputation for expert body work . Their prices, though, have skyrocketed in recent years, perhaps because they do so much work for large insurers. My car was towed there after a fender-bender a few years ago, and their estimate for the insurance work was 35% higher than those from smaller body shops. They were also storing my car in a muddy lot, with the windows open and tree branches hanging on the hood.
This large, busy restaurant has delicious ribs and a large takeout menu. The ribs are quite good, with a sauce that's a bit sweeter than nearby Li'l Porgy's BBQ. As a sit-down restaurant, it's a bit loud and the service can be poor on busy nights. My only complaint about the takeout menu is that the side dishes with the "full platter" meals are quite small.
Li'l Porgy's business has suffered since the opening of the nearby Famous Dave's, but it's still my favorite BBQ. Their ribs are cooked over a slow wood fire and their prices are reasonable, especially for the daily specials. The pork sandwich special on Tuesday and rib slab special on Friday are highly recommended. They're also a good choice for catering.
This store is conveniently located in Country Fair Shopping Center. The owner buys and sells used clothing, shoes and other items, and the sale prices are very good. You'll find many designer- label garments, some barely worn, for a fraction of their original cost. The store is bright and although the racks are jammed fairly tightly, the garments are organized well by types and sizes.
This store, tucked into a narrow side street in downtown Champaign, is the best local source for buying and selling coins, stamps and other collectibles. The owner, Gary, has many years' experience in the business and does a lot of research to be sure you get a fair price. He will also serve as an agent for out-of-town auctions.
Wal Mart gets a lot of bad press, but you can't beat their prices and selection. Of all the discount stores, their staff seems to be among the best trained and most available -- whenever I need help locating an item, I can always find a salesperson here and he or she always knows exactly where the products are. The Savoy store is a few miles south of town, but it's a fast and easy drive.
