Allen Pond Park in Bowie is a very large park with several playgrounds that are completely accessible to people with disabilties. There is one small playground for tiny kids along with a very extensive structure and swings for older kids. It's a large area, has ballfields, a lake with paddleboats in the summer and plenty of space for picnics. Our kids loved the paddle boats!
The Calvert Marine Museum is tucked away in Solomons Island. It packs a lot of Southern Maryland history into a small space. There are regular exhibits, kids camps, and summer concerts by big names such as Bill Cosby and Crosby, Stills and Nash. Our favorite is the Patuxent River Cruise on the Wm. B. Tennison. It's an hour-long cruise on the river, complete with history of the area.
AnnMarie Garden is a beautiful sculpture park in Solomons, MD. It is very large (30 acres), wooded and secluded. The outside exhibits are free and open daily. There are also special events and gallery openings inside the visitor's center, including a "Halloween in the Garden" event in October. It's a very nice place to stroll through.
I first went to Annie's Cleaners because it was next to my bank. But then I kept going back. They are inexpensive and quick. The people there are friendly, and they take bank/credit cards, unlike a lot of other cleaners I've gone to.
When we moved to the area, I had to pick a ob/gyn out of the book of physicians that our health insurance considered "in network". Dr. Nelson Alawode is who I found and I am glad I did. He is knowledgable, friendly, funny, and knows how to be a calming presence when it is needed. He takes the time to learn a little about his patients and remembers when he sees them, for example, he always asks me how things are going where I work (he refers to my workplace by its name). Most importantly, he cares about his work which is to keep his patients and their babies healthy.
When we moved to the area, I had to pick a doctor out of the book of physicians that our health insurance considered "in network". It was a pretty blind search but I came up with one I would not trade. Dr. Annette Gonsalves is our family doctor. She is friendly, knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. When there was a condition she had never heard of that I wanted to discuss with her, she read up on it so she would know what to do next. I have never had a problem getting an appointment with her (even though we are healthy and rarely see her), and her office staff is friendly as well.
Westlake Liquors is your run of the mill liquor store in terms of what they sell. But this family owned business knows about customer service. They are always very friendly (give the kids lollipops whenever they are with us), and one time when I had two children and hands full, they carried my purchase to the car for me. That is why we shop there, although there are plenty of similar stores closer to our house.
Westlake High School has a preschool program that its child development students teach. The high schoolers take classes in the fall, and in the spring use what they have learned to teach a class of 3-5 yr olds. My son went there and loved it. They learned to write, played outside, went on a field trip to the National Zoo, but most of all, learned to socialize with their peers.
The White Plains Regional Park off of St. Charles Parkway in White Plains (not in La Plata as the address says) has a large playground area for children. There are three different playgrounds according to age, so a lot of entertainment value. The nice thing about this particular playground is that there are trees surrounding parts of it, providing some shade from the hot sun. There are also picnic tables and public bathrooms.
I like Speedy Clean Car Wash because it is just that. You get in and out quickly, there are several stations so you don't have to wait very long. You can either wash your car yourself or go through the automatic wash. Also, it is inexpensive which is always a plus.
