If you're ever stuck with a kid under the age of 12 (maybe even some older) and aren't sure where to take them for entertainment, this place is great. For just a few bucks, you can have them color their own item. It's also a great place to get a personalized gift for someone.
PROS: Cheap, fun
CONS: Can take a while to get your item back from the glaze
Not sure within whose "reach" a $1700 couch is, but the "design" part is right on. This is a great place to get decorating ideas and see what the latest trends in furniture are. However, the prices aren't as within reach as one would hope. The staff is very helpful though, and if you're got the dough, this is a great place to go when furniture hunting.
PROS: Very friendly staff
CONS: Prices aren't exactly "within reach"
If you're not squeamish about having a student dentist work on you, this is a good way to get affordable dental care (for those of us who aren't fortunate enough to have dental insurance). Although the student dentists don't work with at the speed of a fully licensed dentist - although that is probably a good thing - the fact that they are being graded means they will do a better job than the average dentist out of the yellow pages.
This is one of the best gyms in town for yoga and spinning classes. The spinning studio feels small and hot, but the instructors more than make up for it with their expertise. The gym itself is beautiful and very relaxing.
PROS: Beautiful environment
CONS: Class prices slightly higher than most LA gyms
Say what you will about Nixon, but it is clear that he rose from very humble beginnings. This presidential library is probably modest as far as presidential libraries go, but it is a place where you can lose a couple of hours easily. There are cool exhibits like the ones for the moon landings, and what is very interesting is a walk out back to the small house where Nixon was born.
PROS: Good way to spend a couple of hours
CONS: Kids might get bored
This market is great for getting good Iranian and other ethnic foods, but the amount of merchandise (and customers!) would fit comfortably into a space about four times bigger. It is always crowded both inside the store and in the meager parking lot in the back. Also, the produce is hit and miss, so unless you are going there for specialty items only, it isn't going to be one-stop shopping.
PROS: Great Persian food you can't find anywhere else
CONS: Crowded and crazy, also very little parking.
When I go in for a haircut, I know I'll walk out happy with what they do. Be specific about what you want and the staff there is as good - maybe better - as any high dollar place. The sheer volume of cuts they do makes them pros. They've also got a decent selection of products for sale so when you pay, it's easy to pick up a container or bottle of something for grooming.
CONS: Limited parking
If you just want to bowl, this is probably the most expensive place in town to do it. However, if you want to hang out with friends in a place with good ambience, have a few drinks, and maybe bowl a couple of games, this place is as good as any. The food is mediocre, but don't fret, you're at the Hollywood and Highland complex, so there are better eats just a few feet away.
Know someone who just had a baby or adopted? Don't fret if they don't have a registry or you don't know what to get them - go to Storyopolis. They have great prints and a great selection of children's books. The experience of the store itself is a fun one; it's like stepping into a very nice art gallery.
If you're not shopping online and want an in-store experience, this is the place to be for music and media. Check out all of the great poster on the wall - they are all for sale. In addition to a pretty wicked selection and a jazz room that isn't bad, the staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Be sure to check out their live music schedule. They get some good artists playing at least a couple of times a week, and not just all rock either. A couple of months ago, they had The Preservation Hall Jazz Band straight from New Orleans.
PROS: Knowledgeable staff
CONS: Parking lot is small and fills up quickly, especially on weekends.
