Kappa Restaurant

Pearland, TX Chinese Restaurants - Pearland, TX Japanese Restaurants - Pearland, TX Restaurants 08/04/06: 'Great sushi near the heart of Pearland's Silverlake Village'

I only wish we had stopped here sooner! We'd driven past this restaurant several times, and seen it when visiting Jake's Grill in the same lot. We were impressed by the delicious and quality sushi. They also offer Chinese meals, which we didn't try, but the Japanese appetizers and sushi we had were excellent. The staff are very swift on their feet, and take care of you - checking on the order, refilling drinks, etc. It seems like a family-run establishment to some extent, and you can see that every person in the kitchen is interested in how well the patrons are doing.

Jake's Grill

Pearland, TX Restaurants 08/04/06: 'Terrific hometown grill - packed on weekend nights'

One of the best things about Jake's is their dedication to the local community - it's not only the friendliness and laidback atmosphere when you walk in (pictures on the wall, music playing, lots of families and couples hanging out at tables and booths), but the fact that the owners decided to stay in town and stick it out through Hurricane Rita in 2005. Their attitude was that if they were a neighborhood restaurant, they should stay open at least for the emergency personnel and law enforcement who were staying around. That's endeared them to a lot of people living here.
And did I mention that they have absolutely exquisite shakes, and moist, delicious hamburgers?

Cardullo's Gourmet Shoppe

Cambridge, MA Gourmet Shops 08/04/06: 'Expensive but very good selection'

If it can be had in New England, without shipping that is, it'll be in Cardullo's. It's one of the only places in the entire US that carries Pavlova eggs. However, the prices are very high and the amount of room is fairly small. That means that most items exist in only very small amounts and may sell out if there's a coinciding holiday.

Pearland Premier Cinema 6

Pearland, TX Movie Theaters 08/04/06: 'Cheap thrills and nice staff'

This Pearland location doesn't have the softest stadium sized seating, but the ambiance is friendly and laidback, the staff are nice and neighborly, and the price is right for both concessions and tickets. Maybe not the place to see a first day blockbuster but a good place to comfortably catch almost any other kind of film.

Cinemark 18

Webster, TX Movie Theaters 08/04/06: 'Count two reviews recommending the comfortable seats!'

This Cinemark does sport some very comfortable seats. It's also much harder than in the nearest first run competitor, Gulf Pointe 30, to get a bad "view". Staff is efficient and the place is constantly packed for opening night films and especially on weekend evenings. Still, worth the first run price.

Dollar Cinema

Webster, TX Movie Theaters 08/04/06: 'Fun and cheap way to catch up on 2nd run films'

If you missed a film in the theatres, or just weren't sure if it was worth paying $6-9 for ... but didn't want to wait until the DVD came out... this is the place to go. These theatres are in older shape than the newer Cinemark across the street, and don't offer fancy stadium seating. But fortunately, the concession stand is a lot cheaper than the Cinemark, and so are the tickets.

Mediterranean Chef

Houston, TX Restaurants 04/07/06: 'Best Greek/medit. food in Houston'

Great, great restaurant. I cannot say enough good things about this place. We dropped in on a whim and had one of the best, most flavorful Greek/Mediterranean meals ever (our favorite type of cuisine, along with Vietnamese). Our waitress was incredibly friendly and the owner also introduced himself to everyone. We were served promptly, and the prices are very, very reasonable considering the delicious and flavorful food. Great grape leaves, gyros, salad, and bakalava. Don't miss!

Coffee House

Kemah, TX Restaurants 04/07/06: 'A good place to get your beignet and cafe au lait fix'

This is located at the Kemah boardwalk, which is generally pretty overpriced when it comes to restaurants. But I've been here several times and always found the staff to be pleasant and the food to be solid. It's more popular with tourists than locals, except during the winter. Because of the large mural paintings depicting New Orleans, and the overall NOLA theme of the restaurant, some people might be intimidated to visit, or think it morbid.
On the contrary, our first visit here after the hurricane, we overheard a group of young evacuees from NOLA discussing their new lives after Katrina.

Muddie Waters Coffee House

Pearland, TX Misc. Foods Markets - Pearland, TX Coffee Shops and Diners 04/07/06: 'Wish there were more local coffeehouses like this!'

Muddie Waters is anything but muddy - in fact, it's beautifully decorated and has a variety of things to do like books or boards - if you're not completely absorbed with the quality coffee and food. They often have events - especially concerts - which adds to the community vibe. I was especially impressed that they carried a form of Numi tea that I haven't seen anywhere else in Houston. Definitely worth a visit, for their breakfast deals or a coffee and pastry.

Coffee Central

Houston, TX Coffee Shops and Diners 04/07/06: 'Oh, oh, the beignets!'

The staff here is really nice - very accomodating - and the coffee is solid and strong. But Coffee Central's secret weapon is its beignets. For those of you new to these delights, as I was before moving to Houston, beignets are the New Orleanian's answer to doughnuts. They are cooked like doughnuts but have no holes, and are shaped more squarish than circular, and are light on the inside and slightly crisper on the outside, then doused liberally with powdered sugar. They give you a great portion of beignets for a few bucks - a little bit of heaven. Coffee Central's only downside is the uncomfortable furniture (not really for hanging out in, although they have lots of magazines to read), and the fact that the beignets aren't made from morning to night. They are specifically made early and late - so make sure your first visit isn't in the afternoon, but is either in the morning or evening.
