The Lyons United Methodist Church is a beautiful stone church located in the heart of downtown Lyons. The church, while small, is quite beautiful inside. They also hold Catholic services in this church every weekend, since there is no catholic church in town. The best part about the church is in the summer during Good Ol' Days, the church hosts the biggest and best garage sale of the year
The Lyons Depot Library is actually a great building architecturally. It used to be the old train depot back when the train ran straight down what is now Main Street in Lyons. It has been converted to the town's local library. Run by volunteers, the hours are great, the service is great and the selection is a good as you would hope for in a small town library. They are linked with Boulder and Longmont's libraries, so you can get pretty much anything they have but in Lyons!
The Old Lyons Recorder is the local paper. I must say that while it is still a good source of information on what is going on in the town of Lyons, you must be very patient when reading it. As a former grammar teacher, I find it painful when there are 5 typos or grammatical errors on the front page. It is very local, which I love, but you must overlook the awful editing.
Planet Bluegrass puts on two of the best music festivals around, but they are right in the heart of Lyons. In early summer the bluegrass festival is something people from all over the world come to. The cars line up for their camping spots for 2 days, and the 3 day festival is sold out before last years event ended. The folk life festival happens in late summer, and also brings incredible talent. My in-laws were able to see Norah Jones, front row, center, right after she had won the grammy for best break-out artist. She had committed to the festival before she hit it big, and still performed.
The Anchorage seems extrodinarily out of place. It's right off highway 66 and 36 and even without any water for miles, it does an incredible business for sailboats. They have a great inventory, and they are always busy. Though I have not been fortunate enough to be able to purchase a boat from them, the staff is knowledgable enough that if/when I ever do buy a sailboat, it will be from them.
this is a great place for nostalgia. They have pinball machines from every era, and while you can play them (they take quarters!) they are also living exhibits of a museum. There is a plaque above each pinball machine and it tells the history of each machine. It's a super cute house converted to an old school pinball arcade. It's located right in the heart of downtown Lyons.
When my husbands grandmother fell and broke her hip we brought her to the emergency room at Longmont United Hospital. The staff there was efficient and friendly, and though she had problems with her stay, the service was not one of them. My husband was also born here, and I work with many at the Hope Cancer Care Center, and every experience has been a great one. The new remodel is beautiful.
My husband and I were looking for a nice place to recomend to our guests when we got married two years ago. Since many people were travelling far (some came from europe!) to Colorado, we really wanted them to stay somewhere that "felt" like Colorado. We wanted to give them the opportunity to stay in/near the mountains, with a nice small town feel. That is what Rock'n River Bed and Breakfast offers. Although we didn't have many guests who stayed there, we would recommend it based on the beautiful location
The Lyons Royal Wok is the local place to get a great deal on pretty good Chinese food. The family that runs it is always friendly and the food is great! I love that the portion sizes are big and the prices are fairly inexpensive. The whole menu is available for take-out, which is my favorite part. Even in small town Lyons you can get take out chinese.
Check out Oskar Blues (or Oskars - as the locals call it) in downtown Lyons. Great music comes through this venue on a regular basis. The food is okay, although they do have great happy hour drink specials! Make sure if you live in Boulder or Longmont to call and reserve the Blues Bus so you don't have to drive yourself home!
