Many of my neighbors use Arbor Real for their lawn and tree care so I called and asked them to come take a look at my new house. I have a large yard, numerous fruit trees and a lot of trees that need trimming, whacking and pruning. Brian and his crew came out the next day, explained everything so competely I think I actually understand! He gave me a very thorough written estimate and a price for all the services I need in every combination I requested. The whole neighborhood looks spectacular, so I know their work is top notch. The work they are currently doing on the garden at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fairport is phenominal!
PROS: Local & family-owned.
I chose this office about 7 years ago based on the fact that it is a participating provider for my HMO and it is right next to work. I use my OB/GYN primarily, but went for my first physical this year and have been so pleasantly surprised by the new Dr. Glazer. Dr. Gary is young and very communicative. He has ordered tests that no other Dr. has even recommended. I am able to get in right away when I need to, and Dr. G gives me samples so I don't have to fill prescriptions! he always makes time for a sit in his office to talk and go over questions. I am always in and out within the hour. I can walk from downtown and there is plenty of parking now that the attached hospital is closed. sigh.
PROS: Great, personal care.
CONS: Genesee Hospital is closed.
This quaint village store on the historic Erie Canal is just a gem! They carry a wonderful selection of used books and vintage reading material, including comics! The childrens' room has some real hidden treasures from new and used books to toys and antiques. There is a great trade-in system for customers to trade their unwanted books for new selections on a 2-for-1 basis. You can even sit in a comfortable chair, drink herbal tea and read. There are gifts items and antiques sprinkled throughout the store. This is a must if you're in the village of Fairport. Wander over the lift bridge and discover a new favorite!
PROS: Fun and unique!
CONS: Limited parking on street only.
Sebastian and his family run a top-notch local pizza parlor. They even serve tripe! This is definitely a no-frills place with 6 tables and a counter, but the pizza is delish and the service is as friendly as it gets. Why pay to support national chains when you can support a locally owned business? This is the place where Moms and their kids meet before ballet class, after soccer practice, and whenever they need a night off from cooking! Delivery is always quick and served with a smile and a lollipop. You can't get that from any chain shop! In the heart of the village of Fairport, righ across from the Village Landing.
PROS: Local & family-owned.
This is a must-see store! Now in their 2nd, bigger location, Candy Nation has candy from all over the world and every candy you can imagine from your childhood. Remember those little pouches of "Gold Rush" gum? You'll find them at Candy Nation. Want to buy a candy bar you tried on vacation in England? They have it at Candy Nation. Penny candy? You bet! Even the now-not-so-politically-correct candy cigarettes! This store is a gem and people of all ages love it. You'll see the same look of awe on the faces of children and adults alike!
PROS: Fun candy heaven!
The food is great, the atmosphere is great, the decor is great. If I could have my house decorated like 2Vine, I'd never leave. 2Vine offers a bit of NYC upstate. The bar is always crowded yet they always manage to seat you quickly. The food is devine, but pricey. This is a great special-occasion restaurant. Arena's Florist does their decor and it is SPECTACULAR. I feel like I should be drinking Cosmopolitans and hanging out with the girls from Sex in the City there. Add this to your list of must-try eateries in Rochester.
PROS: FABULOUS food, great decor.
CONS: Expensive and loud.
Butterfly Kisses is easy to miss but worth finding! This tiny little pink cottage is located in the back of the parking lot of a nature store near the 4 corners of Fairport. The entrance to the lot is across from the Baptist church. Inside you'll find high-quality new and used children's clothing and toys, trendy jewelry and gift items. They feature items made by local artisans, too. There is so much to see it's hard to believe they get it all so artfully displayed in a space the size of a bathroom. It's adorable and warm and the owners are lovely and friendly. This is one of those little gems you'll find in the villages surrounding Rochester.
PROS: Unique items, some handmade!
CONS: Tiny location, hard to find.
For $15, my daughter was placed on a giant Dumbo in a basement that was painted a garish royal blue and smelled moldy. Her hair was not washed, but was cut dry. The whole experience took 8 minutes. The 'stylist' was dressed like a field worker. For $15, I took my daughter to a real salon where her hair was washed, cut properly, dried, and sprayed with a bit of glitter for fun. I would not recommend this specialty salon at all. You can get more for your money at a real salon.
CONS: Unprofessional, expensive for services offered.
Anything Goes has a nice selection of name-brand and high-end clothing, with an emphasis on women's items. They always have a great selection of accessories. I find them to be too high priced in comparison to other local consignment stores, but they tend to have more upscale names. Their childrens' clothing selection is hit or miss at best, and is overpriced. This is a good store to sell your used items, and then take your proceeds and spend them elsewhere. The staff is most definitely friendlier than another well-known competitor. The store itself is small and not easy to navigate if you have a stroller. The dressing rooms are few (3), but roomy enough for 2 (if you need to have a child try something on). This is a great place to find ballet and tap shoes, as well as outerwear for the winter months.
PROS: Easy access for handicapped, lots of parking.
CONS: Limited childrens' section.
This practice was recommended to me by my OB/GYN, who takes her own children there. I now have 2 children under the care of Dr. Elizabeth Supra and we love her! Located near McQuaid, there is ample free parking and the staff is friendly and helpful. My kids love Dr. Supra (and her sticker box!). And I as a Mom appreciate the loving care and the advice she imparts. All the Drs at Rainbow are great, and are always willing to see us with last-minute appointments for those nasty ear infections and sore throats that always seem to crop up on Fridays.
PROS: Great new, bigger office.
CONS: Staff can be stand-offish.
