We used photographers from Susan Beard for our wedding photography - they did an absolutely phenomenal job, were not at all intrusive during the day of the wedding, and produced a myriad of beautiful shots. I cannot believe they managed to make my husband and I look so good. I am having trouble narrowing the proofs down to 100 shots for our formal album. Everyone there is incredibly nice & helpful. In addition to shooting events they do in-house portraits and really beautiful album design. Certainly on the higher end in terms of price but worth it 200%.
PROS: Stunning photography
CONS: Expensive, but worth it
I am craving a piece of my wedding cake, which was from Bredenbecks. They do a variety of baked goods from cupcakes & brownies to elaborate wedding cakes. Our red velvet cake was delicious & beautiful and the frosting perfectly matched the swatch I'd given them. One thing I was a bit saddened by is that the platform on which the cake rested and the platform for the top tier did not look "finished" - they were rough around the edges & looked like they needed to be covered up. I wish I'd been warned of this from the beginning - something to keep in mind if you are getting a cake from them - ask the florist to give it a once-over.
That aside though, we were very happy, & wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others.
PROS: Great wedding cakes!
I bought my bridal gown & bridesmaid dresses from Nicole - they were the only store in the Philadelphia area to carry Rivini gowns. Nicole and her daughter Marina run the show here & do a great job - they are incredibly patient and friendly; they did all my alterations, made my veil, and everything was perfect and on time. I couldn't have been happier with the service or the final result. Because it's outside the city, it's difficult to get to without a car, but there is a train station a 15 minute walk away which I did use once & worked fine.
An added bonus is that they are open late on Wednesday & Thursday, so if you work you don't have to go on the weekend. They are also really good about scheduling appointments with plenty of time in between - I never once felt rush & the shop never seemed crowded to me.
They do have occasional trunk shows for Rivini, Amsale & their other designers where they offer a small discount.
PROS: Great selection & wonderful service
CONS: Difficult to get to without a car
I joined 12th Street Gym a year ago when I moved to Philadelphia; I was trying to get in shape for my wedding & drop a few pounds - they are known throughout the area for good classes, which is what I was looking for - I easily surpassed by goal weight by doing a combination of 12th street's aerobics, yoga & pilates classes, as well as cardio & weight training - they have a great variety of equipment and facilities, including a sun deck, pool, and raquet ball courts. The instructors are great & will kick your butt. Classes are well scheduled to accomodate work - they have early am, lunch time and evening classes, and the gym is open from 5:30am to 11pm on weekdays. Most classes are 45 minutes to 1 hour, but they also have a few 20 minute abs classes that are a perfect add-on to a workout. Cardio studios don't have a lot in the way of A/V equipment - it's better if you have your own ipod or similar.
This gym is also a great deal - roughly $500/year, including all classes. They also have a tanning salon and chiropractor in-house.
PROS: Great value, good facilities
CONS: Limited A/V equipment
My family has been using Bed & Biscuit for several years, they do a great job looking after dogs - lots of playtime, doggy massages for the older dogs, and ours always came home freshly bathed & happy. Staff is very vigilant & good-natured, & they've always given us a full report of puppy's behaviour while we were away; we'd never take our dog anywhere else.
Yes, it's incredibly expensive - but this store is such a feast for the senses it's entirely forgiveable. Wonderful respite from the chaos and clamor outside on 5th avenue - their flower arrangements are some of the most beautiful I've seen. I've gotten a few gifts from here, most notably a set of linked bud vases that you can bend into different shapes. A really fun idea & looks great with a few delicate flowers. They also have a good variety of teas & tea accessories. You must visit, even if you can't even contemplate buying anything.
PROS: Beautiful merchandise
CONS: Tres chere
I love coming here every time I visit my parents in Greensboro; it's a tiny shop but a treasure chest of well-chosen items from Nanette Lepore, BCBG, Michael Stars, Theory, Trina Turk,...
They carry a range of clothes from very casual jeans & totes to pj's, cocktail dresses, and bathing suits. Plus a small but delectable offering of handbags, jewelry and accessories.
Most is on the pricey side but you can catch some great sales; service is very friendly and unintrusive.
Perfect for gifts - mostly geared towards females 15-35
PROS: Great selection, staff
This store recently moved to 17th & Chestnut - they have some nice stuff but it is definitely pretty expensive for what it is. They do however buy designer clothes from drop-ins - I've made some $ this way, getting rid of things I didn't need/wasn't wearing. The deal is they give you 30% of the price they will offer things for in cash, or 50% in store credit. It's not much but more than you get from goodwill! I agree with previous reviewers that the t-shirts are pretty cute. Overall it's very hit-or-miss though.
PROS: Will buy clothes from you
CONS: Overpriced for what it is
So going to the GYN is not something I look forward to on a regular basis but these guys are great - the nurses are very well organized, waiting room is cozy & nicely stocked with magazines; I had an appt. during my lunch hour & they were right on time (I'm not sure I've ever had an on-time medical appointment in my life!). Everyone was really sweet, my exam was quick & painless, and the MD I spoke with was very friendly and really helpful & honest with a couple of my questions. Would highly recommend to any woman of any age. Note: they are very popular & get booked up well in advance. It is harder to get an appt. with a female than a male MD.
PROS: Efficient, well-informed staff
CONS: Book early - they are very popular
My husband and I were impressed with this hotel for it's convenient location and what we felt was reasonable value (we were staying outside of term time - I'm sure their rates are much higher when school's in session). Nice views and adequate facilities, with a few quaint New England touches like patchwork quilts & shaker-inspired furniture. We'd definitely recommend it to anyone; I don't recall whether parking was included in our rate but was very convenient - and anyone who has ever tried to park near Harvard Square knows this can be invaluable. Note that this is not a hugely luxurious hotel, but certainly on the higher-end in terms of comfort & style.
PROS: Great location, reasonable off-season rates
