Efes Restaurant
Efes is next door to the pizza place I frequent with my student organization. It's a good healthy alternative to pizza. I'm not an expert on Mediterranean food, but I find their food to be enjoyable.
Makeda Ethiopian Restaurant
Makeda is the only African restaurant I've ever been to, but I'd definately go back sometime. A very classy place, with great Ethiopian food. It's worth the experience if you want to try a cuisine that you rarely see in America.
Thomas Sweet Ice Cream
Thomas Sweet has the most amazing homemade ice cream imaginable. This colorful little cafe has many flavors to choose from, and then even more toppings. My only complaint is that they don't take credit card, and that the wait can be very long in the warmer months.
Doll's Place
Doll's is located behind RW Johnson Hospital, so it draws an older, more professional crowd than do the bars on Easton Ave. It's a clean, classy-looking place with a laid back atmosphere. I've always felt very relaxed going there with my friends.
Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort
I had a miserable experience at the Taj poker room. Two dealers in a row were very unprofessional and didn't seem to know the nuances of the game. The casino itself is unbearably gaudy. Do yourself a favor and go to the House of Blues next door.
Pyramid Books
Pyramid Books has a rather large selection of used books mostly organized by author. The pricing is easy to understand (50% off, 20% for new titles) and the store cat is friendly; however, the atmosphere is cold and doesn't encourage lingering.
noodle gourmet
Now that YY Doodle's is gone, I can honestly say that Noodle Gourmet makes the best Chinese food in New Brunswick. Their food is tasty (check the title for my favorite dish) and reasonably priced. If you don't have a lot of money, get a cold noodle dish from the appetizer menu for $3.95, it will fill you up. The staff is occasionally rude, however, and their bubble tea is a bit weak.
Zafra Vegetarian Restaurant
Many of my friends like Zafra; I've been there once, and it was enough for me. We went there on a weekday night, when there were only two other customers in the restaurant. The service was extremely slow. Our meals took about 45 minutes to be served to us; by this time, they were cold. Maybe it was just an unlucky night, but I wouldn't want to give them a second chance.
R-U Grill & Pizza Inc
RU Grill might be a hallmark of Rutgers tradition, but it's not the safest place to get a meal. I got a chicken parm sandwich there last year that gave me the worst food poisoning I've ever experienced. They also don't have a public restroom, and the seating is pretty awful.
Thinisu
Thinisu is a great little restaurant that serves south Indian food at inexpensive prices. I've never paid more than $10 for my meals there. They are vegetarian-friendly, and even have vegan selections on the menu. They're also only fast food on Easton Ave for health-conscious people, now that Happy's Grille is gone. The atmosphere is clean and cheerful. My only complaint is that their food is always incredibly spicy, even when I ask them to make it mild.
