Pleasant Acres has been around for a long time. They have stayed small and know what they are doing. Every spring I by a few annuals and they are always hardy and long lasting. I have a fushia plant that I got there that is still blooming even in the cold fall weather. The staff at Pleasant Acres is very helpful in answering questions and making suggestions that fit your home environment. They also have a full florist cases filled with beautiful flowers and arrangements.
I've been with Westerly Community Credit Union for a couple of years now. I originally went I ended up moving all of our account to this bank. They give personalized service, call you back quickly. I've never had to wait more than a couple of minutes in line inside or in the drivethrough of which they have3 lanes that get serviced very quickly. Its a home town bank.
PROS: very personalized
Get Fired Up is a paint your own pottery studio. They have a wide range of clay items to paint, plates, cups, coin banks, outlet covers, pitchers to name only a few. In additon to paints they have stamps, sponges and stensils that you can use to personalize your items. I see lots of kids birthday parites here. They also will paint something for you (like a wedding platter) if you don't have the skills to do it yourself (like me). Price is about $8 for the sitting fee and then you pay for each ceramic piece you paint. Those run from a few dollars to $15-$20. It takes about a week to get your piece back from firing.
I love Stained Glass Designs. There are so many unique items to choose from. The store font windows are covered with stained glass items. You can request special one of a kind pieces made or you can buy some of the stock on display. Classes are given in the back. There are other non-stained glass items to choose from also. No matter how many times I go in to the store, I always find something new I didn't see before.
PROS: wide selection, beautiful work
I've used Port City Taxi on a number of occations for business. They are always on time and know where they are going. The drivers are courteous. The people who answer the phones are courteous. I've needed them at some very early hours and they have been on time. There was a time also when a they couldn't make an early morning pickup so they called the night before to tell me a different company would be doing the transport. taxi's are clean and well maintained.
On a fall weekend, you have a very hard time getting near Clyde's Cider Mill, but its worth trying to find a parking space. This place has been around forever and the place just gets better. Kids love to watch the cider being pressed. Clyde's cider and apple wine are great. I've given both as gifts a few times. Their store has a lot of different, homemade items too.
Twice is Nice has a very wide following. It seems that when I talk to anyone who has kids up and down the shoreline, everyone has been to Twice is Nice. There selection is wonderful and everything is in terrific condition. The prices are fair and reasonable. I've always walked out with something. Too bad my daughter is grown and I don't go as often as I once did.
PROS: fantastic selection
For a local, non chain store, Fin and Feather has a lot to offer. It takes up the space of 2 store fronts. They have lots of merchandise and a lot of staff on the floor to answer questions. They carry the usual array of pets and pet products. Their tropical fish section is quite extensive. Their rabbits could use a larger, non glass cage though. Fin and Feather also has a pet gift line, lots of things for the pet owner. Nice store. Friendly staff.
I buy most of my pet hay at Pets Plus. They are the only store around that carries the line I like to feed. Pets Plus has the usual array of pets and pet paraphernalia. They even have a small section for hermit crabs. They have recently added what looks like gourmet dog treats, looks like a little bakery display. They have fish, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, dogs, reptiles to name the ones I can remember. Prices are reasonable.
Groton Expressway is a really convenient way to get your oil changed. I rolled in at about 10:15 on a monday morning and was back on the road by 10:30. The staff is very friendly. The technican came out and explained to me what was done, and what he recommended to be done....with no pressure to get it done there. The waiting area is clean and comfortable. They have coffee, water and popcorn to snack on.
PROS: quick service, friendly staff
