Strictly Roots Music

Detroit, MI CDs / Record Stores 11/16/05: 'if you like underground hip hop and reggae, this is the place for you'

As a supporter as indie and local hip hop and just plain rare music, this is the only store in the entire city of Detroit where I can get the music I want. And if they don't have it, they will have it the next day, guaranteed. And I'm not talking about the same old lame mixtapes that feature talkative DJ's and the same old tired mainstream rappers either...I mean they have the best of the best in underground hip hop and local R&B...you know the good stuff that the radio is scared to touch. And not necessarily just music either...they have books, and good ones. Not the same old "this man did me wrong" crap either...They have something to fit every taste. Their specialty is reggae, and even though I'm really not into reggae I never hesitate to show them some love and attend one of the may reggae shows that they sponsor.

Portis's Unisex Barber Shop

Detroit, MI Barbers 11/13/05: 'like a good neighbor'

Let me come right out and say that I highly recommend this shop. First of all, I never had to wait no longer than 15 minutes for a chair. Second of all, there's not the "thug" element with their loud talking, and excessive profanity, and needless to say, these guys can cut some hair. I've been a customer since 1999 and have yet to be dissatisfied with the haircut, or the service it's self. And as a cheapskate who hates to tip, regardless of the service, this is one place I don't mind leaving at least a 5 dollar tip because the service is just that good. And not to mention the way they get to know their customers goes a long way with me.

Specs Howard School-Broadcast

Southfield, MI Vocational Schools 11/10/05: 'all that hard work and all that money down the drain'

Sure the ads are inviting. But are very misleading. They are good sales people though. Their ads make it seem like if you enroll in their school, they will give you sufficient training in both the technical and business aspects of broadcasting. Which they do, however what they don't tell you is upon completion of their 8 month course, if you don't have a real college degree, the piece of paper they give you when you graduate is worthless.
