The official name is Chan's Gourmet Chinese Restaurant, but they do not taste any different than all the other Chinese restaurants around here. They are more expensive and have nicer take-out boxes, but that really doesn't mean "gourmet" to me. They are not bad at all, just not good enough to justify a higher cost.
I think the scenery along the Naperville riverwalk is beautiful during the spring or fall. The constant crowd of people, skateboarders, and angry geese just do not make it worthwhile most of the time. Each time I have been there, the water is a murky brown, goose droppings covered the walkway, and you mostly see the backs of overpriced stores along the way. When Money magazine praised the riverwalk while voting Naperville one of the best places to live, I get the feeling that they looked at the website instead of actually visiting.
CONS: crowded, hard to find parking, vicious geese
This park is more of a historical museum, especially when compared to Blackberry Farms. They are a bit more expensive for locals, too. Their rates are $7 for adults, seniors $6, and kids (4-17) are $4.50 each. The grounds are well kept. I thought the park was interesting, but the kids were more excited about the candy in the gift shop.
I took my nieces to this amusement park/museum/arboretum. The young ones had a lot of fun, and it seems like the park is geared more towards those that are 10 and under. The tween and teenager really couldn't relate. I wish they had longer hours, but you really do not need a whole day to cover the entire park. The entrance fee is $3.75 for resident kids and seniors, $4.25 for resident adults, and free for kids under 2. Fees double for non-residents. Bird watching, fishing, and path walks are free, but only at certain times.
PROS: cheap fun for young residents
CONS: not for picky teens, fees double for non-Fox Valley residents
This company's main office is in Downers Grove, IL, but our broker (Jerry Maglone) works in their Geneva office. It took several months for us to find a buyer and a new house to move to, but Jerry kept us informed of interest rates. He would call every so often just to see if we wanted to run some numbers or change the preapproval amount, but was not pestering us at all. He is very friendly and easy to reach by phone. He always calls back if I leave a message and I feel he went out of his way to make sure we got the house we wanted with the mortgage terms we wanted.
PROS: easy to reach, easy to talk to, good rates
They are in a nondescript building that is in an office park, so they were a little hard to find at first. We really liked our mortgage broker, who was referred to us by our realtor. We had no problems at closing, which is always a good thing. Unfortunately, we found their fees to be a little high and we felt we could have had a lower rate given our credit history.
PROS: no problems at closing
CONS: not very competitive rates.
I needed new batteries in several watches, and a new band for another watch. I visited several of the chain-store jewelers in the Fox Valley mall, but they were all packed with people. They were a bit more expensive than what I expected, but they were the only ones willing to have all the watches ready that day. The saleswoman was very friendly, cleaned my wedding rings while I was looking at earrings, and had cleaned all my watches and had them set to the correct time by the time I was done shopping. while they did not have the earrings I was looking for, they did say they could have a pair made how I wanted.
PROS: good service
CONS: a little bit expensive compared to some
While I really hope none of my appliances break again, I would be happy to use this company again. I got an appointment sooner than I expected and still got an apology for the wait. He took the time to fully explain everything, and (surprisingly) sent a thank you post card afterwards. The charges were explained over the phone when I made the appointment, so there were no surprises. I mentioned that I was thinking of changing the kitchen appliances and received a lot of useful information during the visit. They even have a "recommended" list of appliances on their website.
PROS: knowledgeable, friendly, prompt
CONS: not cheap compared to some, but well worth the cost
The crew that came to paint several rooms in my homw were exceptionally nice. They had no problems fixing anything I pointed out. The problem was that I had to keep pointing things out. Some of the problems were very obvious. I can say that they were much neater than another painter I used previously. I was mostly disappointed with the price. I explained to Steve that I only had X amount of money to spend. I asked him several times if he was sure that the price was the final price. Sure enough, the final price was significantly more than I expected. The amount of paint needed was underestimated by several cans, as was the required coats and the amount of time needed. This company came highly recommended by my sister, who had a very different experience than I had. It could be because she chose to have decorative painting where as I just wanted color on my walls. I am giving them 3 stars instead of two because my sister had a very good experience with them, and my house has several hard to reach areas that were painted well.
It is not uncommon to wait 45 minutes to be seen, but I have waited over 1 1/2 hrs the last two visits. I can understand an occasional wait for an emergency, but this is all the time. He has also changed his work schedule and is only open during school hours.
