Sunset Kahili is an older, well-maintained five-story condo with friendly management and staff. Each of the 36 units has an ocean view, a washer/dryer, cable TV and lanai. The rates vary for one-bedroom and two-bedroom units. The top floors are a little more expensive. Ther is s 3 night minimum stay. They have a lot of return retirees each year during the winter months. I would recommend this well-maintained condo to visitors and retirees.
Poipu Kapili is a new 60-unit seaside condominium complex. It is one of Poipu's best top-end values. The units are lage and nicely furnished: each is privately owned and about 45 of them are in the rental pool. They have ocean views, ceiling fans, full kitchens, and a queen-size sofa bed in teh living room. their one-bedroom units have either a queen or king bed and their two-bedroom units typically have a king bed in the master bedroom and two twins in the second bedroom. There's a tennis court and swimming pool. I would recommend this top value condominium.
St. Raphael's, the oldest Catholic church on Kauai, is the burial site of some of the first Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii. The original church, built in 1854, was a lava rock and coral mortar with walls three feet thick. When the church was enlarged in 1936, it was all plastered over and it now has a more typical whitewashed appearancce. I would recommend visiting this old Catholic church.
Bali Hai Realty Incorporated is the place to come to if you are looking to rent vacation homes in the Hanalei area. If you would rather stay in a spacious home instead of a hotel with small units for your family, then Bali Hai is the place to call. They have vacation home rentals in the Hanalei area, as well as Haene, Princeville and Anini. Their weekly rental rates are reasonable.
Hanalei Inn is an older local hostelry located in Hanalei Bay. It has five older, lackluster units on Highway 560, on the west side of the village. Rates are very reasonable and the more expensive units have kitchenettes. If you are budget-minded and don't mind staying in an older hostel, then I would recommend this place to you.
Bed & Breakfast & Beach is a two-minute walk from the beach pavilion seciton of Hanalei Bay. There are four rooms, each furnished with queen beds, except for the largest room, which has a king. All have their own bath, either attached or just outside the room. The contemporary house has a wraparound 2nd floor lanai (porch) and hardwood floors. This is a beautiful B&B with outsanding views which is why I would recommend it to visitors.
The Waikoli Huiia Church is a favorite subject for watercolorists. The green wooden church retains an airy Pacific feel, with large windows that open outwards and high ceilings. The doors remain open during the day, and visitors are welcome to go inside. The Waioli Church Choir, the island's best, sings hymns in Hawaiian at the Sunday service. Visitors should see this beautiful church.
The little Christ Memorial Espiscopal Church attracts attention because of its striking lava rock architecture. It was built in 1941, but the interesting lava rock headstones in the churchyard are much older, dating back to when the original Hawaiian Congregational Church stood on this site. There is a nice place called Aloha International, next door which has an exhibit of traditional Hawaiiana, including musical instruments and leis. This is a nice historical church to visit.
Mahina Kai is a B&B that caters to the budget-minded traveler. The contemporary home has Asian-Pacific touches, such as shoji doors and a swimming pool and hot tub in the Japanese garden. It's a nice, quiet place to relax. Thre are three rooms with private bathrooms and breakfast is included, as well as a two-bedroom aparment with kitchenette that is reasonably priced. This is a great place to stay at for visitors on a budget.
The Hotel Coral Reef is a small family-run hotel with two sections. The newest and bes-value rooms are in the main building, which was rebuilt after Hurricane Iniki and has a handful of rooms with private ath, TV and either one queen or a double and twin bed. Rooms in the older seaside builidng have oceanfront lanais and is a bit more roomy but are not as spiffy. This nice hotel has complimentary coffee and pastires in the lobby. I would recommend this nice small hotel to visitors.
