At Hot Pot City you're the chef. They have a large assortment of meats to choose from including chicken, beef, pork, lamb, and even fish. They also have marinated meats which are very good. So after selecting the meat you want from the buffet tables, you go to your table where there is a large grill. Here is where you cook the meat. Butter is provided to keep your meat from sticking. Besides the grill there is also a pot of soup where you can cook noodles, wontons, fish balls, and more. There isn't much in the way of vegetables here so this place is definitely for meat lovers.
PROS: Lots of meat!
CONS: Not the best tasting soup broth.
I heard a lot about Barney's gourmet burgers before I actually tried it. Overall, Barney's has very good burgers to offer. They have a wide selection to choose from. Types of burgers you probably wouldn't even imagine. Everything is very fresh. One thing you should make not of if you decide to eat at Barney's is that their burger tends to be on the well-done side. If you actually get well-done you're burger may be charred a bit.
PROS: great selection
CONS: a little on the well-done side
Fat slice has pretty good pizza and sells by the slice. However you better try to avoid that last slice on the pan. I stupidly ordered it before and it was wet and mushy and turned me off from the place for half a year. But for the most part their pizza is pretty fresh. You get a large slice and can add red pepper or parmesan cheese if you like. It's cheap and quick if you're scrounging for pennies and don't have much time.
PROS: cheap, fast, large slice
CONS: don't get the last slice!
I've been to La Vals on a couple occassions. Mostly because it is cheap and they sell pizza by the slice. Besides pizza they offer dishes like spaghetti and pasta. I was not particularly impressed by their pizza. Both nearby Fat Slice and Blondies offer a better pie. Also I was quite shocked because one time they took 15 minutes to serve my one slice of pizza despite having the presliced pizzas up in the front. And I completely agree with reviewer Timothy J. Scary and thuggish people seem to find their way to La Vals and the interior is very drab.
Admittedly this won't be the greatest Mexican food you can find but it's pretty good for what Berkeley has to offer. La Burrita offers a wide selection of burritos, tacos, and other plates for a reasonable, if not low, price. The interior of the restaurant is pretty small so at lunch time the line is out the door and there is little room to sit inside. La Burrita also offers a selection of fresh salsa to go with your order.
PROS: Tasty salsa, low prices.
CONS: Hard to get a seat when the lunch crowd is there.
If you have a burger craving that must be satisfied this place will do. They offer sides like french frieds to complement your burger. They also offer other types of sandwiches if burgers aren't really your thing. As for the taste, their burgers are somewhat lacking in that category. I personally prefer the taste of In-N-Out burgers over Bongo Burger. But this place is worth giving a shot.
I.B. Hoagies offers a wide selection of hoagies, burgers, and sides. You can tell everything you order is made fresh, therefore it takes a little while for your hoagie to be ready. Although most of the stuff I.B. Hoagies offer is pretty good tasting, almost all of it is really greasy. So if you're looking for a healthy meal you better try another place. A meal of a hoagie, drink, and fries will run you about $10, so this place is a bit on the pricey side. A few other things to note is cash only, only one free refill of soda, and insufficient seating.
PROS: Hot and fresh
CONS: Pricey, greasy, takes a little while, hard to find seating
I've had gyros on a couple of occassions at other Greek restaurants, but none of them have come close to the taste and quality of the gyros that Simply Greek has to offer. The restaurant is small so there's not much space to sit at times. Service is very friendly and the food is fresh. The alos offer a very wide selection with several different sides.
PROS: delicious, fresh
CONS: a little on the pricey side, crowded at times
Gomnaru is a great hole-in-the-wall, Korean restaurant. Prices went up slightly since the last reviewer but they still give you a lot of food for the price you pay. The most popular dish they serve is the spciy BBQ chicken. You get 3 pieces of de-boned chicken that are marinated in a delicious spicy sauce. Along with that you get rice, salad, miso soup, and a fried the potato. The fried potato is great too. Gomnaru has a lot of selection besides the BBQ chicken, such as beef, pork, bibimbab.
PROS: Good prices, delicious food, fresh
CONS: Crowded during lunch hours
If everyone in Berkeley knew just a little bit about computers this place would go out of business. The prices they charge for some of the oldest computers and parts you'll ever find are exorbitant. I would have to recommend buying a new eMachine system over the old, used computeres they sell. They also offer dial-up service but that is also priced very expensively. So, if you're looking to save money on computer parts and don't want computers of ages ago, do yourself a favor and avoid this place and just hit up radio shack a few blocks away.
PROS: employees seem somewhat knowledgeable about computers
CONS: over priced old computer stuff
