I love going to The Other Side Cafe with my friends. It's an awesome place to hang out and the food is great. We always order the fruit and cheese plate when we go and their tea is wonderful. Since the upper-level was re-opened, there are plenty of places to sit. The atmosphere is unpretentious and there is always great music playing (ranging from The Stone Roses to Led Zeppelin). The staff is friendly too. I would recommend this place to anyone.
PROS: Great vegetarian food, great staff, and the prices aren't bad either
CD Spins is my favorite store for new music. They have a lot of titles that Newbury Comics does not carry. The prices are great. The staff is super helpful and very friendly. They really know music. It is an awesome place to hang out and browse music.
Loews Movie Theatre, located in the sketchy as-is Liberty Tree Mall, is terrible. It is your typical overpriced suburban movie theatre. The employees are miserable. My friend is diabetic and has to bring her own food and the consession stand lady was completely unreasonable. We had to sneak the food in. The bathrooms are gross too. I am never going there again.
I HATE The Big Dog. It is everything I hate about sports and bars consolidated into one massive restaurant. The food is terrible not to mention that it is ear-splittingly loud in there. There are television sets everywhere blaring every sports game and there are obnoxious jocks everywhere you look. However, ever since their alcohol license was revoked, it has been considerably quieter over there.
CONS: Everything about this place
I love Market Basket! The biggest draw is that the prices are cheap for quality stuff. The items on sale are especially great. They have a huge variety of almost every product. The employees are really nice and helpful. They have great store-bran bagels and a good selection of magazines. The selection of vegetables could be better, though.
The Old Towne Market in Post Office Square is not great. They do not have any magazines and have a limited variety of products. They are overpriced and the owner is not particularly pleasant The place looks very nice and is clean, though I won't be going back there.
PROS: Inventory disappears quickly
CONS: Expensive, unpleasant
Though it is not too far from my house, I would not recommend Lynnfield House of Pizza. The pizza is greasy and just does not taste all that great. The booths aren't very comfortable either.
Located a short walk from the Central Square T stop in Cambridge, the Garment District is a unique place to shop for vintage clothing. The Dollar-A-Pound section is fun, if you're in the mood to dig through piles of clothing. Some days I find a ton of stuff that I love, other days I don't find anything. Not into the mood for digging through clothes? The upstairs section is more organized, but pricier. Some items that were originally bought at Savers for a dollar are marked up to $10 to $15, but it's all good stuff. They also have a selection of costumes and independent clothing lines. It's definitely worth checking out if you have a few hours to spend and don't want to dig through Goodwill or Savers for vintage items.
I would not recommend going to the B. Dalton Bookstore unless you are looking for the latest bestsellers and cannot get to a Barnes and Noble for whatever reason. It is small and overpriced. I almost never find anything that I am looking for on the occasion that I am browsing through this store. They have a decent selection of magazines but not much else to offer. I also do not like the way the store is set up - it feels overcrowded.
The Wakefield Beebe Library is a beautiful building. They have a wide selection of titles in stock. It's a great place to do research for a school project or paper and there are enough tables to sit down at and study. The librarians are very helpful here. The DVD section is also wonderful - they have more movies in stock that I actually want to see than Blockbuster, and it's only a dollar to rent a movie. It's located in a great and convenient spot and I have never had to look hard to find parking.
