I?ve been on the USS Kidd before and it?s a unique experience for anyone who has not been on a military vessel. I couldn?t get over how small the openings of the ship were nor the sleeping quarters of the men. Overall, you?re able to look at most of the ship and the tour is really interesting and informative. The USS Kidd has a good program where they can have sleepovers for children such as boy scout troups and such, and overall it?s a really good learning experience for anyone.
PROS: First Hand Look at Military Vessels
CONS: Handicapped Access
For quick and cheap fried chicken, Chicken Shack is the place to go. Their chicken is always hot and tasty and they have very prompt service. This is not a "sit down" type restuarant where you go "hang out" and veg with your friends. This is a place to get your food and go, and yet are assured of a good product at a good price. One of the bad things about the Chicken Shack is that the area that it is located in is kind of questionable now. This will chase off anyone who is not familar with the area.
PROS: Fast, Hot, Good Chicken and Sides
CONS: Area of Town is questionable
Christine Bannister is the owner of Christina's restaurant in downtown Baton Rouge. They have a great lunch special every weekday and their restaurant it constantly overloaded. Well worth the walk, you need to get here early for the seating and to insure that you get the items that you want to eat for lunch as items will run out each day. They have convenient take out and their breads at the begining of the meal will fill you up as well.
PROS: Wonder lunch specials,
Our lunch gang would try to walk at least once every two weeks to Harrington?s Restaurant in downtown Baton Rouge. Their food is incredibly delicious and authentic Cajun flavor. With lunch specials every day, you cannot go wrong in going here although the prices have gone up since I have been. Their red beans and rice are served with catfish on Mondays. That sounds like an odd combination especially since most people eat sausage with their red beans, but it definitely works. Other specialties that are delicious are their seafood lasagna, their crawfish and crabmeat pasta and their delicious etouffee and gumbo. Worth the walk or drive, you will definitely enjoy this lunch treat!
PROS: Cajun Specialties
The Capital Corner Market and News Stand is a good place good place to purchase newspapers, magazines, and basic snack and soft drink items. They have a wide variety of reading material, and it's a good place to drop by after you've eatten at one of the local restaurants but you have a few minutes to piddle around with before going back to work. Every now and then you will find something that you wish to buy but unless you're in the downtown area and needing to buy items, this is not the best place to go. Everything pretty much is full priced and you find very few "deals".
PROS: In DownTown Area, Good for the area
One of my best friends was a couponaholic. While I am what you would call thrifty, she went out of her way to go to the Argosy Casino a lot to cash in coupons for free ?money? on her casino card. Because she went to the area so much, she would talk some us into walking with her to get money on our cards as well with these coupons. Well, on the way to the casino we found out that Argosy has a wonderful buffet that you can experience which will definitely fill you up to the max and have an injury to boot. Of all buffets, I have never seen such as Argosy Atrium Buffet except in Las Vegas. The food is plentiful, and I mean plentiful, extremely high quality, and you?re not asked really to limit yourself. The best buffets were those with seafood. I have never been fond of oysters until I ate their fried oysters and that was the end of that prejudice. Every bit of their food is incredible and if you go here for lunch you will not want to work the rest of the day You?ll want to take a nap instead. Seriously, this is a great deal for the money, and you will not regret it.
PROS: Seafood Buffet, Steaks
CONS: Cost, Out of the Way, You'll Get Fat!
It was a sad day several years ago when T J Ribs building burned. Many of us were very upset and rightly so because this place had the best ribs and barbeque in the Baton Rouge area. Fortunately this business has been rebuilt but the food didn?t change with the remodeling. The ribs absolutely melt in your mouth and overall, every item of the menu is worth trying at least once. A jump in the car from our workplace and down the interstate a bit T J Ribs is well worth the drive, and a great place to go to if you?re in the LSU area.
PROS: Barbeque Mmmmmm
CONS: Traffic Can Sometimes be a Problem
If you want to take a 50s or 60s blast to the past, the best place to go is to the Frosttop in downtown Baton Rouge. This restaurant has been restored to its original brilliance and features the best Shrimpburger that there is in the Baton Rouge area. The hamburgers are great, and you cannot beat drinking out of those chilled glass mugs that keep your cold drinks icy cold. A long time favorite of our lunchtime gang, but out of walking distance from a good part of the downtown area, it is still a place worth jumping into your car and driving for a dining experience you will not forget.
PROS: Atmosphere, Shrimpburger, Iced Cold Drinks
CONS: Out of the Way in Downtown
Some individuals at work invited me to the Pastime Restaurant and Lounge one day for lunch. I didn?t really ?want? to go there, but I wound up going anyway. My perception of this business from what I had heard of it was correct. This is more of a bar atmosphere than a regular restaurant and that one time that I went there, the building was rather dark and dank. I don?t remember much about the food in the place, because of that. My entire perception what I wanted to get away from there as fast as I possible. Because of that experience I have never gone here again although I have been asked many other times.
PROS: Not Really a "restaurant
CONS: A Bar, Dark, Dreary
The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport does not have as wide a variety of food available as you would find in other airports of similar size. Although their food is of good quality, the atmosphere is not conducive to relaxed eating and of course like most airports the prices are rather high. However, if you are strapped and cannot leave the airport for some reason, this is a perfectly acceptable place to eat.
PROS: Good Food,
CONS: Prices, Atmosphere
