My son attended Tanglewood Elementary School in Baton Rouge for several years. In my opinion, this school has a combination of closeness as well as good academics. My son?s third grade teacher was able to diagnose several problems that my son had with his skills and get him the help that he needed to become more successful and pass the third grade. If there?s one thing that I must say in the negative for this school it is probably something that is more of the fault of the school system itself than this school in general. One of my son?s elementary school teachers at this school fell ill and because of that a series of substitute teachers were sent to the class. My son managed to ?baloney? these teachers by his ?sweet? personality to getting them to pass the second grade without doing all of the work involved. Because of this, I was not pleased overall with that aspect of his school experience at Tanglewood.
PROS: Some Good Teachers
CONS: Substitute Policies
I have shopped at Kirschman?s two or three times while trying to buy furniture. During my visits, the selection of items was really incredible, but in my opinion the prices in the store were way too high for individuals of modest means. Many of the items appear to be focused on those in the much higher income brackets (over $75,000 a year at least) and because of that this store doesn?t really seem to appeal to the common man if you don?t mind my saying. If you have money and like high quality and selection of unique items, this is the store for you otherwise, please pass.
PROS: Wide Selection Good Quality
In the past I have purchased several items from Sherwood Magnavox including televisions. The quality of their merchandise is good and the variety is also excellent. Salesmen are not usually pushy. The only thing that I do not like about Sherwood Magnavox is that when they do advertise some items especially around Christmastime that they do not enough of those items in stock and thus try to lure you in to get you to buy a higher priced item. Other than that the store is much more than it appears to be on the outside and I encourage you to try them for a regular purchase (not a loss leader in the newspaper)
PROS: Good Merchandise and Rather Decent Prices
CONS: Loss Leaders
My oldest son attends Our Lady of the Lake Medical College and has done so for the past 1 years. He chose this school because it was close to home and because it has higher credentials than other nearby smaller universities. He also wanted to have a smaller close knit environment so that he could have more specialized interactions with professors. Unlike another public university that he attended, my son has found that he is more able to accomplish his goals and have better grades at this college than at a public university. Because of this, he has a higher grade point average now and will likely succeed in accomplishing his long termed goals of obtaining a doctor of audiology degree at LSU in the future. The only down side of this school is the cost which is significantly higher than a public university. However, in my opinion it is worth it and I recommend it to you.
PROS: Excellent Professors, Smaller Classes
If you are a fan of college football, you will need to go to Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at least one time in your life for the experience on the home team side (naturally). This is the most incredible experience that you could ever have and one that you must experience as a student as well. I have attended several games at Tiger Stadium, and the best experience by far is at night! The excitement is too much to even describe in words, and the noise is beyond anything you could fathom. Let?s put it this way ? if it registers on a seismograph then it must be loud right? (grin) This is one experience of a lifetime that you must enjoy and I encourage you to do it!
PROS: Incredible Experience of a Lifetime
I attended LSU in Baton Rouge and I am glad that I took that bold step to go to a major university such as this instead of one of the smaller state colleges in the area. I attended LSU because I wanted to get a high quality education and use that reference to get a good job. In all, most of the professors that I had for courses at LSU were good with the exception of the teachers that I had for freshman English, including 1001 or whatever they call it now. That one professor absolutely tore our papers to shreds if we wrote on topics that she did not agree with and almost gave my parents and I ulcers. From being an honor student I almost went on academic probation, and I found this was the case with many of those in my class. English teachers in high school would look over several of our papers, make suggestions and then we would turn them in to get bad grades. In my opinion, something is definitely wrong with the English department in reference to freshman English. In addition, I found that the Journalism department was very volatile as well, very uncaring and did not even attempt to assist students in trying to be successful. Overall, the best professors were those in the history subjects and those with education in general. The student teacher program was excellent and I had a great role model that gave me excellent advise on how to handle difficult matters which I still use today in my current job. Overall, my experiences at LSU have been great and I give you a good recommendation. It is the most excellent school in this area, and my son will be attending it within a few years.
PROS: High Quality Education
CONS: Freshman English Professors
Now that I have moved to another state, I have a different opinion about the East Baton Rouge Parish School system than I did before. With two children in two different types of school environments, I believe I can speak with authority on this subject. When I left this school system my oldest son was of the way through the 9th grade. He was supposedly smart enough to be representing the school in the state rally for two subjects. When I moved to another school system in another state, he almost flunked out of both of those subjects. In addition my youngest son was in special education. While it is true that he was diagnosed properly by the school system, he received no occupational therapy for his disability despite the fact that he needed it tremendously. In addition he needed more speech therapy, and needed technical items (aka a computer) to help him with his school studies because of his disabilities. These things were not provided BUT were provided when we moved to another school system and had him reevaluated. Upon returning home to visit relatives ONE month after going to the new school system, they were surprised that he had progressed so far in such a short amount of time. In my opinion, the reason was that he was finally getting the proper education needed. Because of this and other things I will not mention, I do not recommend that anyone move to the City of Baton Rouge and be dependent on this school system for their children?s education. If you do move to the City of Baton Rouge (East Baton Rouge parish), I suggest highly that you send your child to a private school.
PROS: It's in East Baton Rouge
CONS: Not Acceptable Education for Children
I have purchased tires at Jetstream Tire before and found them to be a good bargain. They have a good warranty and price for their merchandise. When I?ve gone to their business to have alignments and so forth the prices were reasonable and the service was very professional. Even when I have had my children with me, they treated me with courtesy even when one of my kids was kind of rowdy. While in the area, I would check out this business for your tire and service needs.
PROS: Good Location, Good Prices
Gerald Market and Deli is a rarity for the Denham Road / Pride area. Located at a strategic intersection, this store offers a rather good variety of items at reasonable prices considering that it is out in the ?country? so to speak. I was able to buy items in this store for a make shift Christmas dinner which actually turned out quite well. In addition, they offer a wide variety of foods in their deli section and their meats are quire flavorful. Instead of traveling way into Central, we have quite often stopped at this store for a quick and easy meal.
PROS: Out in the Denham Rd Area, Good Prices
CONS: Out in the Denham Rd / Pride Area
When Central Tire and Automotive was not able to help me last year on vacation, the individuals at In Tune Auto Service helped with assisting with my tires. The individuals were professional and courteous and when the problem didn?t require any monetary repairs, they actually refused to take my money for their time. I?m impressed with their honesty and integrity and if I lived in this area, I would visit them more often.
PROS: Not Out for your money
CONS: Way Out in Central
