As with most public schools, Lincoln High School suffers from the familiar issues of overcrowding and understaffing of teachers. During my years at Lincoln (over 10 years ago now) I encountered a lot of great teachers, a few bad or new teachers, a good administration that cared for the students (even if it was difficult to care for EACH individual student), great extracirricular programs, and a generally positive and cohesive student body. It's hard to boil down four years in a post...but I would rate Lincoln HS a 3.5 if i could. The school has talented teachers and programs for students who accel in acedemics - but it is only as good as the effort each student puts into their education. I didn't get this message until halfway through my sophmore year. Luckily a counselor noticed my sliding performance and general disaffected attitude, and pulled me in for a talk every time she saw me. I eventually ended up working in her office as a study hall, and she helped guide me towards a AP classes, a scholarship paid college education, post-graduate degrees, and a successful career. We are now good friends, and I know that she is working hard to help each student meet his/her potential as a high school student and beyond. The good news is that there are many teachers and staff members who have similar goals at Lincoln.
Morella is a great little family run mexican restaurant in Village Square (the same shopping center as Fresh Market and Stein Mart). The food is always fresh tasting and isn't laden with lard like other restaurants. The restaurant is stylishly decorated, in subtle earth tones. The wait staff is friendly and attentive, and the kitchen always delivers hot food fast. I like to go for lunch, when I can usually get a big lunch with all I can eat salsa and chips for $6.
I got a deal on a used washer and dryer from Clarks a few years ago. I still have both units and they are working fine. The sales clerk tried to steer me towards new appliances, but when I made it clear that I didn't have the money or the credit he backed off and helped me find a good used unit. The dryer has only had two repairs since then (the dryer belt broke both times due to unbalanced loads) and the washer hasn't had a need for any service since I got it. I can't reccomend their service because they cancelled two days in a row at 4pm - after I waited all day. They also charge $50 just for coming to your house (and they tried to charge me for one of the cancelled visits). A better bet is to go pick up the part and talk to the people working in the parts warehouse. If you're nice they'll give you pretty good instructions on how to replace the belt yourself and save $80.
PROS: good deals on used appliances
CONS: repair service is expensive and is prone to cancel late in the day
I went to Nesmiths to help my dad pick out some shrubberies. The plants at Nesmiths are beautiful, and they have a pretty good selection. The prices were higher than what you'll find at chain stores, but the quality was much better. You could tell that the plants were well cared for and not subject to stressful shipping conditions. The staff that we talked to were very nice and helpful and knew what they were talking about. The only thing I didn't like is that one of the employees tried to hard-sell my dad on Landscaping services, and I felt that was unnecessary. I have since been back a few times and not encountered the same problem again. Perhaps this was just an overzealous new employee or a simple miscommunication. Nevertheless I would recommend Nesmiths to anyone on the NE side of town looking for a local nursery and good hearty plants.
Native Nurseries has a great selection of plantlife for your landscaping needs. The focus here is on what works in this area, instead of pushing the pretty plants that are not built to handle the scorching humidity of Tallahassee's summers. For you, this means that the plants that you get here will probably thrive (when planted in the right shade area). They also have friendly and knowledgeable staff to help you plan your project.
I've taken my computer to Network Tallahassee because they were my Internet Service Providor and they offered computer repair. I was pleased with the work that they did. The service was good and timely - I had my computer back in one day. They were relatively inexpensive (compared to Geek Squad or CompUSA) but I do not like their flat rate pricing. Basically they recently created a policy where every repair costs a flat rate per hour with a minimum of one hour. So even if it takes them 10 minutes to diagnose and replace a power supply, you will get charged for a complete hour (plus parts). Because of this, I will keep looking elsewhere.
PROS: good service
CONS: expensive flat rate (min. 1hour).
I love going to Quarter Moon when I need a unique gift or just want to treat myself to the boutique expereince without spending a lot of money. They have comfortable clothing and some fashionable lines. With the "bohemian" look being fashionable right now, this is a great place to find something unique to up your wardrobe. They also have a nice selection of home details. Being a fan of asian decor, I can easily find something to accent my living room.
This mom & pop store specializes in women's lingere. It's a great place to find a good deal on something to spice up the bedroom (or just make you feel like a million bucks). They have pretty good prices - much better than the places in the mall and a good selection. They also have videos and other 'accessories'.
The Radiator Shop specializes in just that, radiators. While I think they also offer other services, I have only been there to get my radiator replaced. The staff if friendly and will give you a no fuss estimate that is very fair (I actually saved $50 over other estimates). They were done with my car two hours from when I dropped it off. I would recommend this shop to anyone who needs radiator repair or replacement. I also would recommend bringing your car in early in the morning as they will be able to work on your car first.
Panhandle Pet Supply is a locally owned store with three locations. They carry a wide selection of supplies for dogs, cats, rabbits and other small mammals, and fish. They also have a small selection of mammals and fish for sale. Their tanks are fairly clean and they have a good selection of freshwater fish. Some of the species that they carry are hard to find locally and they have fair prices on them. They also have a 14 day guarantee for their fish (I think saltwater fish are excluded unless you provide a water sample). The staff is knowledgeable and willing to help.
