Lalos Restaurant
I don't get it - Lalos is always crowded but I find the food lackluster as well as their margaritas. The place is VERY loud and diffiicult to have a conversation in. There is often live music - a pianist - or loud music blasting. For quality mexican food, go down the road to Las Fuentes restaurant in Stickney.
PROS: plenty of people to people-watch, affordable
CONS: crowded, loud, lackluster food
Burlington Realty Co
We bought our home through Burlington Realty and were very pleased with the entire process. We worked with Carole Peters. At our first meeting she got a feel for what we were looking for and took us on a very informational tour of the village. She was honest about the flooding zones and businesses/services to avoid or at least be cautious using, and we really appreciated that. She knew exactly what homes would and would not suit our needs yet indulged us by showing us a home that we thought we might like but she knew wouldn't work for us. Of course, she was right, it didn't suit our needs. We were very thankful for her guidance, especially since it was our first home and we often didn't even know what to ask.
PROS: honest, knowledgeable, flexible, good quality homes
CONS:
Oak Park Dental Group
Oak Park Dental Group is a very professional organization that sends you postcards to remind you of appointments, offers Saturday and early morning hours, and is always curteous and helpful. I hate going to the dentist but must say that Dr. Wine really makes filling cavities an all right experience. I don't feel the needle for the novacaine and haven't experienced pain at all during the cavity-filling process. He is honest and will tell you that you can hold off on getting certain work done, but will also let you know that if you put off other work, you may need a root canal, etc. He's the best dentist I've found so far in the area.
PROS: professional, clean, honest, as painless as a dentist can be
CONS: not a participating member in some insurances, a little pricey
The Cork
The Cork is a great neighborhood wine and liquor store. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the owner will quickly remember and befriend you. The store is small. very well organized, clean, and has a wide selection of beers, wines, liquors, cigars, and some wonderful cheeses. They will open up about any bottle so that you can sample before you buy.
PROS: great selection, good prices, friendly and knowledgeable, tastings
CONS: not the selection of a huge chain store but will order for you what u like
Emilio's
For amazing Spanish tapas in the western suburbs, head to Emilios in Hillside. I think the food here is better than their restaurant in downtown Chicago. Mention it's your birthday and they bring you a free profiteroles dessert (without the embarrassing singing). I recommend the queso de cabra (baked goat cheese and marinara sauce), championes rellenos (stuffed mushrooms), gambas a la plancha (grilled shrimp with garlic), and the salmn a la vasca.
PROS: great food and sangria at affordable prices
CONS:
Moda Hair & Nail Salon
For a good haircut and color at a good price go to Moda Salon. Jaclyn cuts and highlights my hair there and I have always been very happy with the results. I received more compliments from friends and coworkers on the highlights she gave me than on the highlights I had done at the much more expensive Charles Ifergan Salon downtown. My cut and foil highlights cost around $70. The highlights alone at Charles Ifergan cost $75. I can tell that the fancier salons downtown give a little better cut but for a very good quality cut at a much better price, I go to Moda.
PROS: good qualtiy cut at a good price, great highlights at a good price
CONS:
Las Fuentes
This is the best authentic Mexican food in the western suburbs (and I've lived in Mexico). I highly recommend the very powerful but delicious margaritas, the enchiladas las fuents, pollo al chipotle, pollo en mole sauce, and the chiles rellenos. Very affordable and generous portions. The ambiance is ok - the restaurant is in an old Boohemian dumpling house so it's an odd mix of old European architecture with Mexican decorations. The is live music and dancing often on weekend nights (after 9 pm or so).
PROS: excellent food, family friendly, very affordable, great margaritas
CONS:
Gean Landscape Company
We used D.R. Gean Landscaping for our fence and lanscaping installations. The fence is just gorgeous and the landscaping is guaranteed for a year. I really like the high quality plants and materials Dave Gean uses but most of all, I appreciate the customer service. The crew arrives on time, doesn't make you wait "between 9am and noon;" they arrive promptly at 8 am or whenever they tell you they'll be there. They also leave the yard spotless - no messes. Also, Dave Gean will help you pick out the best plants for your yard and the role you want it to fulfill - shade tree, ornamental tree, etc.
PROS: quality work, great customer service
CONS:
Chew Chew Cafe
Chew Chew's has been located next to the railroad tracks in downtown Riverside for 10 years. It serves delicious American faire in an elegant yet family friendly environment. In nice weather, you can eat out on the patio and watch the trains go by - a favorite for little kids. I highly recommend the parmesan chicken sandwich and the beef with horseradish sauce. Finish it off with the Belgian lava cake.
PROS: affordable, family friendly, great food, cute location
CONS:
