Mani's used to be much bigger at this Main Street location which it now shares with several other businesses. There are still lots of baked goods..notably the "Faux Nuts" (non-fried, natural donuts" and many yummy cakes and cookies made with hypo-allergenic flours and no refined sugar. Really delicious for "healthy" style baked goods. My sense is that the ownership must have changed a while back. Still a great resource though. The four stars instead of five is for the harrowing wedding experience we had with Mani eleven years ago... he made our wedding cake and FORGOT to deliver it...a total disaster. They had to slap one together at the Hollywood location and set it up at the last minute...EXPENSIVE NIGHTMARE!
PROS: Great healthy treats
CONS: DON'T use them as a bakery for any event of significance!!!
This is one stop shopping for the SERIOUS home baker. Although many professionals make this a frequent stop, you can also find everything to make really high end bakery quality cakes and cookies here. Great decorations, cooking supplies and the kind of professional cake pans that make perfectly even, straight sided layers.
PROS: Every baking supply imaginable
CONS: out of the way and pricey, but one stop shopping for home bakers
They have a lot of traditional bakery treats that are scarce on the Westside, like streudel and those giant "Black and White" cookies of Seinfeld fame. They also have wonderful crunchy crusty rye bread to go along with the takeout deli meats.
PROS: Huge selection of baked goods and fresh rye bread
CONS: parking and counter service can both be pretty bad at peak hours
We have been ruining our diets at this place since college! They have been here in Westwood for many years and are still a staple for starving Bruins. The hot donuts simply dusted with cinnamon sugar are the real thing...not like the grocery store variety. The other post is right though...parking is a REAL pain!
PROS: Fresh hot donuts
CONS: parking in the Village is bad...wish they had great coffee too
The greatest place for fresh bread, the bakery is right in back of the shop. You can stop here and get a couple of big crunchy loaves of french bread to use to make guy-sized submarine sandwiches for the next football game or poker night at your place if you want to do the little lady a favor!
PROS: FRESH hot bread and rolls
We love to take our pooches here, they are treated like royalty. If you are on a diet, but have the urge to go to a bakery, here is a quirky alternative...take your dogs here for a box of healthy goodies! Our boys are addicted to the carob cookies shaped like mailmen...really cute for gifts too!
PROS: Fun and healthy for the pups
CONS: wish they had more locations!
Eddie is artistic and helpful, I have had nothing but rave reviews from those who have received flowers I've sent them from Tick Tock. This is a VERY high end shop and you definitely pay for the quality and service you receive, but that is fair. He once arranged a bouquet for me in a beautiful Roseville vase, really special!
PROS: Beautiful and sophisticated
CONS: it's pricey but that is to be expected
This is the source for most of the flowers used by high end florists in the city. You can find pretty much ANYTHING here, but it is a do-it-yourself kind f place. If you are creative with floral arranging...even just putting some of the GORGEOUS and inexpensive bunches of roses or stems of orchids in a simple vase you can save HUNDREDS of dollars here. The parking is poor and the area is worse...but it's fun to go as a group!
PROS: EVERYTHING in terms of flowers, super cheap..geared to retailers
CONS: Bad area and parking and open from dawn to mid-morning
My wife and her friend went here for "emergency" manicures & pedicures for a party after painting one Saturday as their usual spot was booked. Their nails looked pretty when they returned, but they were both a little freaked out by the somewhat unsanitary conditions of the salon. I looked in while on a recent walk and the floors and counters were pretty grubby and a peek at the back sink where their equipment is cleaned made me queasy. My wife's friend DID get a toenail fungus not long after, but it's hard to say from where...I have my suspicions though... I don't think any lady would want to get "waxed" here :0(
PROS: Cheap and convenient..easy to get in for appt.
This is the retail companion to their flagstone business and it is amazing. They offer every kind of building material from lumber to costly stone and marbles as well as everything for those rockhounds interested in more precious stones....They have rock polishing equipment, supplies for jewelry making including tools for precious metals and settings for stones. An unusual mix of offerings, but interesting and handy! There are probably less expensive sources for some of these things, but this place has been here forever and i like seeing what they have on hand.
PROS: Lumber, stone and marble plus jewelry making supplies and more
CONS: May be pricey, but it's so interesting
