Equinox positions itself as high-end yuppie health club, and perhaps many who buy into it go as much for the social scene as the work-out itself. Membership rules tend to be more restrictive than others too, so you can end up paying lots of $ even when you are away for long stretches.
Killington is probably the largest ski area in the East. There are runs for every level of downhill skiing, and they have good instructors for lessons. Boy can it get cold up there at Killington Peak, though. make sure you dress like Admiral Byrd.
Mahopac makes an effort to provide the local personal touch in banking. They are much easier to deal with than the bigger banks and much less bureaucratic. it's nice to still be able to deal with a human rather than an automated menu on the phone.
A classic European-style ski lodge right at Mount Snow. Very cozy with requisite open fireplace. People are friendly and there is a very casual low-key atmosphere, no pretension here.
Mount Snow is a beautiful place for new England skiing experience. It's family friendly and not too demanding in terms of difficulty of the runs. Cross country terrain is lovely.
Just about everything this bake shop does is very good. Conveniently located in downtown Pawling right near the train station, it's a nice spot to pop into or even have a meeting. Pies and muffins are especially good here.
This place has lots of supplies that you might use for arts and crafts projects. It's a small place but has good quality stuff and people are quite helpful. Also good knitting and needlepoint groups.
The vet and assistants are all very caring and responsive. We board our dog there when we go on vacation and we feel relieved to know it is in good hands. The clinic also does a great job bathing the dogs before they are picked up.
This is a wonderful place with washing stations where you can wash your own dog. Fully equipped with everything you need including brushes, shampoos and sprays, blow dryers. Very convenient set-up.
This bakery has the absolute best homemade pies around. It's a bit out of the main walking strip of downtown Ashland, but definitely worth the jog. Don't miss the marionberry pie.
