Warm Things
This shop carries wonderful down-filled pillows, duvets and featherbeds, as well as high-quality bed linens. The prices are very good - more like an outlet store than a boutique, but with boutique level service. Be careful though - it is difficult to return items if you have taken them out of the package.
Green Citizen
Rather than just toss your old appliances in the landfill, take them to Green Citizen. They'll find the best way to recycle or dispose of your old computer, printer, TVs, etc. There is a small charge for some items, but you'll leave knowing that you've made a contribution to a cleaner planet!
Shoreline Aquatic Center
My daughter took windsurfing lessons here and had a wonderful time. It was much less intimidating than going out in the ocean but there was always ample wind and the instructors were very teen-oriented and fun. I appreciated having a nice outdoor cafe to sit at and enjoy the cool breeze off the bay while I waited for her!
Fremont Hills Country Club
You don't have to own a horse or be a member of the country club in order to take advantage of the riding instruction at Fremont Hills. My daughter worked with two different instructors here before she got her own horse, and thoroughly enjoyed her lessons. They offer a great summer camp for kids (again, membership not required). You can also take advantage of the swimming instruction at their fabulous pool even if you are not a member. Lovely facilities and very nice staff!
Cranberry Scoop
If you want to get into the holiday spirit or find a great gift, Cranberry Scoop is a great place to shop. They have very nice seasonal items as well as lovely decorations for your home or garden.
Redwood Grove nature Preserve
This is a wonderful little piece of nature within walking distance of downtown Los Altos. Walking through the redwoods on a misty morning leaves you feeling like you are miles from town. They offer a wonderful educational program for kids, with information about the local habitat.
Shoreline Amphitheatre At Mountain View
We have enjoyed so many wonderful concerts at the Shoreline Ampitheatre - from the San Francisco Symphony with Fourth of July Fireworks to the Dave Matthews Band and even the Dalai Lama. The setting is beautiful as the sun goes down, and we have always felt that it was a safe, clean, well-run venue.
Santana Row
This is a fun environment for an evening out. There are lots of high-end shops, great restaurants and live music. The parking ramp is more than adequate, and it is convenient to several movie theaters. The people watching is as good as it gets in this area, as lots of people head here for the restaurants and music.
Wolf Camera & Video
I have stopped using the Wolf Camera shop in Los Altos. On several occasions I brought in a roll of film to be developed, and when I came to pick them up was handed two sets of prints and charged accordingly. The first couple times it happened, I thought I had simply accidentally filled the form out for duplicate copies. The third time it happened I realized that the shop had actually changed my order form to show that two copies were ordered. When I complained, they admitted that they sometimes accidentally forgot to reset their printer to print out only one copy, and that as long as two had been printed, figured the customer would want them!
San Jose Mercury News
I get the Mercury News everyday, and find that it is an excellent source of local, national and international news. They have a very diligent group of reporters who take their responsibility as journalists seriously. This is what "fair and balanced" really looks like.
