Dr. Seger is a very professional, caring, thorough optometrist. I had tried quite a few over the years and was never convinced about the competence of many. I have been going to Dr. Seger for several years now, and I believe he is knowledgeable, perceptive (no pun intended), and honest. His office seems to have up-to-date equipment, his staff are all very helpful and friendly. Invariably I end up buying my glasses from his office because they are so helpful and work well with my insurance.
I have short, straight hair. John Lee, my stylist at Kris Keyes does a great job at precision cutting. Frequently strangers approach me to ask where I get my hair cut.
Everyone who works in the salon is friendly, and it is a very approachable kind of place.
Prices seem typical for an above average salon. Less than the fancier name brands but more than your typical walk-in place. (I pay $60 for cut and style.)
PROS: friendly atmosphere, good cuts, good shopping nearby
CONS: difficult parking
We used Jackies to shorten some uniform skirts and trousers for my daughter. When we arrived, we were surprised to find quite a long wait. Apparently, most people make an appointment for the fitting.
The work was done well and in a timely manner, once we got in to have the fitting. Prices are competitive, parking is easy, location fairly convenient for most palo altans.
I prefer Elite Cleaners simply because I can walk there and there is never any wait.
Delicious treats can be found here, plus beautiful cakes and tarts for special occasions. For tea time, I like their individual lemon tarts, their small cream puffs, and their napoleans (though the sugar fondant topping is a bit too thick).
They make decent baguette sandwiches and quiches at lunch time, but watch out for the crowds from Palo Alto High School around 1130.
Lousy coffee, so sometimes I grab a pastry to go and head over to Peets for real coffee.
Nice outside tables to have a leisurely snack.
We have purchased four homes in our lifetime (and sold three). In general, I have been unhappy with the agents I have used. But Jan is the big exception. He is a genuinely honest person who also has a practical sense of proper pricing for buyers and sellers.
Jan seems to know the average price range of homes the best. He will price a house so that it will not languish on the market but at the same time so that it will get a good price for the seller.
I have taken a number of items for simple alterations (hemming mostly) to Elite cleaners. The seamstress who works there is very sweet and helpful. There is never any line there, and her turnaround is reasonably fast. She has done a good job matching the finish work on a pair of trousers, above and beyond just doing the basics. One dress I had hemmed, however, did have the hem fall out after a few washings and wearings. Prices seem average. A pleated uniform skirt was about $18 to hem, as were some blue jeans.
Roger Reynolds has a great selection of plants, in particular things other than annuals. You can find unusual plants and hard to find colors in their stock. If you are lucky enough to find an available staff member they are more than helpful and very knowledgeable.
The carriage house also has beautiful indoor plants and gifts--a good place to find special presents.
Prices admittedly are very high--double or triple what you pay at the chain stores.
PROS: selection, helpful staff
There is nothing like walking to an old fashioned toy store with your child. At Palo Alto Sport Shop, the children are welcome, and there are even touchable displays for them.
Yes, they cannot compete with the bulk of merchandise at a chain store, but they make up for it in selectivity, editing out some of the junk that is available for kids. They add the personal touch to their service as well. And the free wrapping jobs make rushing in just before a birthday party a cinch.
Prices are slightly higher than chain competitors, but it's worth it to avoid the crowds. Plus, if you watch the local papers and Children's Theatre programs, coupons for their store abound.
Robert, who runs this business, has a thorough knowledge of trees, and a true aesthetic sense of how a well pruned tree should appear. He is timely in offering estimates as well as in completing a job. His assistants were polite and unintrusive, but I did feel that Robert knows more than they do and his supervision is essential.
A friend recommended Renata for a brow waxing. I ended up splurging on a facial and was completely delighted with my experience.
Renata is a warm, wonderful skin care specialist. She is well educated and has a thorough knowledge of her products and techniques. At the same time, she is never pushy about purchasing products or signing up for regular visits.
You will leave Renata's feeling thoroughly pampered, physically and emotionally. She makes you feel better about yourself, and that is priceless.
I believe her rates are competitive, and even lower than some of the more hoity toity spas like La Belle.
