If you are looking for an exceptional tailor, you need to head on over to Willow Ave in Hoboken and stop in a little shop called Domineco Spoleti Custom Tailoring. My husband and I walked in a couple of Saturdays ago carry 4 suits that he had recently bought. We were certainly not the only ones in the shop, so we had to settle in for about 40 mins until it was our turn. Once I watched Domineco in action, I realized why no one was complaining about the wait. He takes his time with his measurements, and doesn't rush anyone through their fittings. He is quick to greet everyone who comes into the shop, but he focuses on his customer at the time. My husband's suits came out perfect. Domineco Spoleti is not inexpensive, but someone once pointed out why spend all this money on a quality piece of clothing and then cheap out on the alterations, possibly ruining the item? Makes sense to me. One thing to keep in mind is that this shop only takes cash, so definitely ask ahead of time for an estimate of how much your alterations will be. I doubt anyone would be disappointed having alterations done at this tailor shop.
PROS: 1 on 1 attention, no rushing, excellent work
CONS: Cash only and the it's a little pricey
If you're craving some great pizza (sausage, onion & broccoli is beyond good here), you need to check out Turvino's Pizzeria and Restaurant in Glenrock. I've been going there for over 10 years now for pizza and their chicken parm dinners. The portions are large and they serve salads with their dinners. Another favorite in my family is the Penne ala Vodka with sausage and peas! You can't beat the prices. Everything is completely low key, you seat yourself, the waitstaff are local high school/college kids, but the food is delicious. They don't have a liquor license, so you need to bring your own...or just head next door to the Bottle King and pick up your favorite beer or bottle of wine. Don't be put off by the limited parking in the front of the place, there's plenty more in the back and there's an entrance back there too. They're not too far off of Century Rd and Paramus Rd, so they're easy to find.
PROS: Inexpensive, small family pizzeria, BYOB
CONS: Cash only
If you live in Hoboken or nearby you have to check out Urban Kitchen on Adams St. It's cooking school that offers single cooking classes- no need to be tied down certain nights of the week. Each class is a different topic! You can get a group together, or just try something on your own/with a friend. You can also participate in the class and learn how to make something new or just sit and enjoy watching the preparation and then dive into the dishes that have been made. Either way, you're going to have something delicious and have a good time. The classes are also BYOB, so bes sure to stop at the liquor store around the corner for some wine! Definitely a fun night out and a chance to try a new experience. You can check out class listings at their website, www.urbankitchen.biz
PROS: Small classes, class options vary through month, it's BYOB!
We all have shoes that we love but are in need of some TLC. You have to bring them to Giovanni & he will give them new life. I've had shoes resoled, heels replaced & seams resealed. His service is always quick and the prices are reasonable. Quick enough that you can run in and drop off your shoes and still keep the car running.
PROS: Quality service & friendly owner
CONS: The usual Hoboken parking situation
I have to say when I met my husband and learned he got his hair cut at Supercuts....I was a little taken back. But perhaps the one in Hoboken is different than most locations. In the last 5 years, I've never seen him come out of there with a bad cut. They listen to what he wants and they do it. No crazy stylist with an ego doing what they think will look good on you. Sometimes after work there is a wait, so bring the paper with you or just people watch out the window. They're located on Washington St., not too far from the path. They also sell a ton of hair styling products, so you can even pick up what you
PROS: Good service, convenient location
CONS: Sometimes there's a wait
Gina was so helpful when I was shopping for bridal shoes. She had good suggestions and was very patient. She also offers a discount if the bridal party buys there too. All the dying is done in store by her- very important since some places send dye jobs out of the store. She is meticulous about matching the color and successfully got my girls' Euro Red color to match! The shoes were finished exactly when she said and she's always cheerful to deal with. Definitely worth checking out. She's also located just beyond the main shopping area on Park Ave, so parking shouldn't be a problem.
PROS: Personal service, dying charge included!
I enjoyed my experience with East West Bridals so much while I was choosing my wedding gown. They don't rush you, offer suggestions (if you ask) and give honest opinions. Let's face it your mom and your best friend are going to love anything on you...honest opinions matter with the most expensive gown you'll ever own. They have so many Mother of the Bride/Groom and Bridesmaid dresses (flower girl too!) There's a good selection of tiaras and head pieces. My dress came in early, the alterations were perfect and the staff was fun and caring. I highly recommend this place.
PROS: Good prices, large selection
CONS: Located in Secaucus near the oulets- call for directions
I avoided going in this salon for awhile because of the cheesy name, but that was my loss. This salon is clean and the staff is friendly and good at what they do. I enjoyed going here so much I decided to treat my entire bridal part and my mother the day before my wedding to manicures and pedicures. Their prices are average, but there's no skimping on service. If you think you'll be a frequent customer, ask for one of their VIP cards to rack up bonus $'s that you can put towards future services. Definitely a salon to check out.
PROS: Clean!! Within walking distance of town, lots of parking
You won't even notice that Zafra is a tiny place once you sit down and start enjoying the amosphere and the delicious food. They don't take reservations, but if you call ahead they can put you on the list. It's a bring your own bottle, so pick out your favorite and try something new off the menu. I recently went there with family and we ordered different dishes so we could all share. Perfect plan since it's so hard to only pick one thing for dinner. Go ahead....order apps and dessert too!
PROS: Not expensive, good presentation, delicious food
CONS: Small restaurant, doesn't take reservations
If you're having dinner anywhere in Hoboken, you have to cap off your night at East L.A. I must admit the food is just so-so, but the margaritas are fantastic. Just went there with some friends for Cinco de Mayo and that place was packed! We had a blue margarita and a pineapple one. Both were delicious and gave us quite the nice buzz. Other times, I've had their regular ones and the cliche strawberry ones and those are just as good. If you're daring, try one of Margaret's Cadillacs....two of those and you'll be dancing around the bar. Definitely a fun place to hang out with friends (or meet some new ones) and enjoy a good strong margarita.
PROS: Friendly staff, great margaritas
CONS: Can get loud
