99 Ranch Market
My family visits here very often to buy groceries. It has the largest selection out of all the asian supermarkets in the area. It is cheaper than American supermarkets, however it is kind of dirty and there are no employees wandering to help you out. It's a supermarket so it's not really important to have good service anyway. Sometimes the lines are long. They have a meat section, vegetable section, seafood section, snacks, a bakery, and even a cafe. You can buy cooked pork and walk out with dinner in hand.
Pamela's Eastside Cafe'
This is the supermarket my family visits the most. It is close to us and carries the widest selection of all the asian supermarkets in our area. They have a meat section, seafood section, fruits and vegetables section, bakery, and even a place where you can buy cooked pork made asian style for a reasonable price. This is truly an all-in-one store. They are cheaper than American supermarkets but also dirty and have poor service. Most people won't be needing assistance, however. I buy many asian snacks (shrimp chips, squid jerky) that I can't buy in normal supermarkets.
99 Cent Price Buster
99 Cent Price Buster was a complete joke. Inside their store was the dirtiest and most cramped space I have seen. Their shelves are unorganized, and marked right on the huge sign "99 Cents!" was a small red font that read: "And Up" to cover themselves. In reality most of the items they sold were twice as expensive as normal stores. I saw dollar store items for $3. I did not bother with their employees and simply left. My sister bought a 3-pack of erasers for a hefty price because we needed them.
Lion Tully
This is my favorite asian supermarket, although it's a little far from my house. We rarely visit here, but I like their prices and selection. They are huge and offer a seafood and meat section. They don't mind being dirty, and leave their floors kind of messy. Once I spotted raw chicken juice on the floor, which really grossed me out. I don't hesitate to buy the packaged foods like the jello boxes and seaweed. Don't expect anyone to help you here, they aren't that friendly. Which is fine because that's how most asian supermarkets do business: cheap, dirty, and efficient.
Lucky Seven
A decent place for asian groceries and seafood. I would rather not buy normal groceries that can't be had elsewhere here, because this place is kind of dirty. The entire place is brown with dirt and rust spots, which is fine. They are cheaper than American supermarkets, but obviously cut service and cleanliness. You can find a lot of things here not found in American supermarkets, however. I don't come here often.
111 Bakery Inc
This shop was great for vietnamese sandwiches and affordable bread, as well as birthday cakes and pastries. They are usually fast and there is usually no line. The bread is not "hot off the oven", but rather put in baskets and bags. That is rather annoying. They make the best vietnamese sandwiches I know of. However, they have been completely overshadowed by Lee's Sandwiches which opened in the same center. I still prefer this shop over Lee's because of the softer bread. they make the bread thick (more white dough inside) which is what I like.
Party City
This shop carries stuff you can't find anywhere else. I visited some time ago for silly string and poppers. Most of the items they have there are useless, which is what I hate about them. They are also not very cheap, but for the selection that's OK. You can buy everything you want, but surprisingly they don't carry some basics (pinatas are not carried!)
Berryessa Branch Library City Of San Jose
They recently opened last year after shutting down the old library. I love this new library- it has new computers, flat-screen monitors, and even special meeting rooms and "quiet" rooms. There are many computers in the internet center, teen room, and childrens' center. They have a copier in the back that you pay 15 cents per copy for. They have an automatic checkout system using computers and barcode scanners, and sometimes these go haywire. They are organized and have a nice selection of books.
Chavez Supermarket
They are very new, and opened up just a few weeks ago. They opened up next to an asian supermarket and they are in competition. It is wierd to see a flock of asians on one side of the store and hispanics on the other. They have a wide selection of items as is expected of a supermarket. If you are looking for mexican food items, go there, because they specialize in it. I can't give an opinion on the prices yet because they are still new.
Q-Cup
Everybody in my school loves this shop, because it is a great place to hang out. They make a wide variety of drinks and other food items. Sometimes the line is long, but they are popular, especially after a party or movies. Stop by for a quick dose of fun! They are not cheap, however. It is worth the money if you're out with friends, but I wouldn't buy this every day.
