Huge Menu and everything they make is awesome! Some recommendations: Chicken Salad Club on pumpernickel (delicious chicken salad with lettuce, tomato, and bacon on fresh baked bread), Fresh Squeezed Grapefruit Juice, and a chocolate milkshake. All the meals are around $6-$12 and are unforgetable. Try the Diner, you won't be sorry.
The Middle East usually has a lot of good local acts come in on the weekends. It is not a bad place to watch a band but it is a horrible place to drink. The bar is so ridiculously overpriced (even for Boston) it makes you want to find a new hobby. My friend and I went to go see our friend's band and ordered a pitcher of bud light and two shots of Jameson. The bill was $32. Need I say more?
Bartley's is a tiny little burger stop on the outskirts of Harvard Square. Because Bartley's is so small it is usually pretty crowded and you'll have to wait to take a seat. While in line, the hostess will take your order and your food will be there shortly after you sit down. The burgers are interestingly shaped (ball like) but taste great. Each burger is named after a celebrity or politician. My favorite is the Ted Kennedy which has bacon and blue cheese on it.
Champs offers a great dining experience if you are looking to watch a game while you have dinner. Every booth at Champs is fitted with a flat screen television so diners can conveniently enjoy the sporting event of their choice. There are also large plasma screens all over the restaurant. The food at Champs is some of the best in town. I think they have the best wings in town as well as great salads and sandwiches. Try Champs!!!
Bonfattos offers a similar menu to CC peppers or Troy's but doesn't offer the same quality as either. Bonfattos bread isn't particularly good and their meats aren't anything to write home about either. A footlong sub at Bonfattos will run you around 6 bucks and will get the job done if you are hungry. My advice: if you have other options, use them. If not, get a lot of peppers on your sandwich because otherwise it won't taste like much.
At times Troy's makes the best cheesesteaks in centre county and at other times they are inedible. Troy's almost always has fresh great tasting rolls for their sandwiches. Unfortunately, for some reason they oversalt the steak at times making it completely disgusting. Their cold cut sandwiches suffer from the same inconsistency. At times the Nigerian sandwich (roast beef, turkey, salami) is absolutely delicious but at other times the meat just doesn't taste right.
Hoss's is a moderately priced steak house that makes some great steaks! With every entree you get a choice of potato (ie baked, french fries etc) and an unlimited salad bar. The salad bar is huge and includes fresh baked breads, soups, and desert as well as fresh vegetables for salad. My favorite steak there is the 10 ounce clever cut which is a fat piece of steak that goes for about $14 bucks. Hoss's packs a lot of punch for your buck.
This is the ultimate college town eatery. DP dough makes nothing but calzones and they do it right. There are about 30 calzones on the menu but DP dough allows you to create your own zone any way you like it. My favorite is either the buffalo zone (buffalo chicken with blue cheese dipping sauce) or the steak bomb (steak, cheese, peppers, and onions). The doughs are economically priced at a little over $6 each.
Home Delivery Pizza has a great special on Monday night with 10 cent wings. The wings are not anything to write home about but at 10 cents you can't really beat it. They also have cheap pitchers of beer on Monday nights. Otherwise, the food at Home Delivery Pizza is adequate but not spectacular. They have some specialty pizzas that are pretty good but far from the best in State College.
CC Peppers makes a variety of hoagies and cheesesteaks. I have eaten there on numerous ocassions with varying levels of success. There are times when the hoagie rolls do not taste all that fresh and there are times when they are excellent. The meats, cheeses, and veggies are pretty consistently good. I place a lot of weight on the bread and have been left wanting a few times. 8 times out of ten you will get a very good sandwich.
