This is a pretty good caterer. When you get to that age where everyone is getting married, this is one of the places that people seem to check out. I have heard from friends that this place is not the most accomodating, but their food is tasty. They also have a larger than average selection of options for vegetarians and people who chose to keep kosher. I had a friend who said they would only do parties of 100 or more, so if you are having a small event, you may want to look somewhere else.
Every time I visit friends in this part of the city, we go here for bagels and coffee. This place makes some pretty good bagels and they are always warm and fresh so the butter seems to melt on them. Makes my mouth water. They also have other standard bagel stuff like egg sandwiches and breakfast platters. Once, they ran out of OJ in the fridge, which I thought was odd, but other than that, this place is great. The people who work here are really fast and get people in and out of the store, so even if the line looks long, you'll be on your way soon.
Once, when I was en route to visitng someone in the hospital, I decided that I would stop in for a floral arrangement. While I just got something standard, while I was there I saw a man who was getting an insanely large rose arrangment to use when he proposed. I was truly impressed with how attentive the staff was toward him and how they kept showing him different color combinations without getting impatient. I will definitely come back here the next time that I am in this neighborhood.
I would recommend any pet owner to put this on their list of places to call or to go when your pet has an urgent problem and you cannot get in touch with your regular vet. Our usual vet told us to use this place when we could not contact him and it was great advice. We took our dog here once when he had swallowed something and was wheezing. While we were very upset and scared for him, they handled the problem quickly and treated us, the family, very well. The attiudes of the people who work here are fantastic and they are very compassionate also.
If you are taking a class at Stony Brook University or even if you are a full time student, this is a great alternative to the university bookstore. They have just about everything that the university bookstore has and most of the time, the prices are much cheaper. If you are stuck on campus and do not have a car, this place is probably less than a mile from the student center, so it is pretty convenient. You can even call ahead and make sure that they have the titles that you need.
The bagels here are pretty much on par with every other bagel store in the city. But where this place really shines is in cream cheese. I think that most of them (except the plain ones) are homemade, which really makes a difference. My favorite combinations are the walnut raisin on a cinamon raisin bagel or veggie on an everything bagel. They also have a decent selection of lowfat and fat free cream cheeses.
With chain tex-mex places popping up all over the place, this is a refreshing twist on local mexican food. The burritos that they serve here are gigantic and I always leave feeling as if I have eaten too much. The store is kept really spotless. If you go during lunch time, you run the risk of waiting on a long line, but I guess that is every decent place in the city. Be ready when you get to the counter, people get really pissy if you get up there and you do not know what you want.
While this place is a little off the beaten path, it is well worth the trip. My sister introduced me to this place when they first opened and I've been asking her for cupcakes ever since. My favorite is the mocha cupcake, which is really like a slice of cake. The double chocolate cupcakes are also very tasty and rich. These desserts also last a while - I do not know a single person who can eat one in one sitting.
This is a good place to go for bagels and coffee. Their coffee is pretty cheap and it is much better than 7-11. Most of the time the bagels here are hot and fresh, but once I came in and they were out of my favorite kind. They also do a big sandwich business and you can also get catering from this place. While weekend morning bagels are pretty popular, I warn that the line sometimes streches out the door, so get their early or be prepared to wait.
This place advertises in the strangest places - on telephone polls that go up and down the main roads in Suffolk County. It kinds of seems like a joke, but they're the real deal. When I called the number that they post on their signs, they were very profession and considerate when scheduling an appointment. I only had to wait a day for them to come out - since it wasn't urgent, it was not a problem. The quote I got was reasonable compared to what other roofers in the area get, but they were far from cheap.
