Pumpkin's Organic Market

Brooklyn, NY Health & Diet Foods 12/29/06: 'Everything You Didn't Know You Wanted'

Pumpkins is a cozy store. They have a wide variety of stuff, abeit somewhat ecclectic. They seem to support anything with minimal, earth-conscious packaging, and items from artisanal bakers. Then other stuff that seems like a given for a "healthy" store, they are lacking (like supplements and Vitamin Water). I rely on them for organic produce, as it seems fresher and more local than the co-op or back to the land (although the farmer's market is the no. 1 choice for me). I get bulk grains, beans, and spices. Lots of odd items, specialty foods (ie: Raw junk food). And then things like Hemp slippers, essential oils, crunchy/political magazines, etc...The staff is knowledgeable, and kindov metro-hippy. Strange.
THE BEST STUFF: My favorite item from pumpkins is Kicking Horse Kick Ass coffee, (canadian fairtrade, shade grown, organic coffee). Also, Uncle Eddie's Vegan cookies (these are SO hard to find). Kombucha, Liz Lovely cookies, rice pasta....
DOWN SIDE: Don't plan on getting all your grocery shopping done here. It's not a one-stop type of place. Also, they play WAY TOO MUCH bob dylan. But that's just a matter of taste, I guess.
