Located in the old Zany Brainy store, Hobbytown USA has a large selection of model trains, planes and automobiles, toys, arts and crafts kits, gaming supplies for role-players, Thomas The Tank Engine, science kits, some unique baby toys and lots more stuff. Good prices and with a clearance table you should always check out. Nice staff too. You won't find toys this cool at Toys R Us or Target. Must see.
I have used Stacey Young for two parties and both were a great success. We had a pony come to our home in Castro Valley and give rides for my child's 3rd birthday party and for the fourth birthday party we had the "mini-zoo" come. Both times the Pony Party people were prompt, thorough and above all, very very good with both the children and the animals. They stayed beyond the hour we contracted for, answered all questions and gave multiple rides to all the children as we did not have a large number of kids attending. The highlight of the mini-zoo was the number and variety of animals roaming around the enclosed space set up in our yard. At one point one of the chickens laid an egg and the miniature pot-bellied pig ate the egg. The kids were beyond excited. They even got to feed all the animals, all of which were calm and even-tempered.
It's pricey. Between $100 local to Brentwood and the $200 I paid for service to Castro Valley but you get a lot for your money and nobody who attends will ever forget how much fun they had. Especially your child. Mine is still talking about it 3 years later.

This place is an illustration of why Starbuck's sucks. I'm not sure how the staff could screw up a simple breakfast order with two sandwiches, two coffees and two pastries but they did and moreover did not have a means of retrieving the receipt (allegedly). I was in a hurry and did not have time to stand around while they scratched their heads over what to do and they ultimately refused to believe I had paid for two pastries when I clearly had two of everything else and the better part of a 20 dollar bill missing. Skip this place and try a nice American coffee of the affordable variety and a fresh pastry at the Primrose Bakery on the other side of the Village. It'll be nicer and less frustrating.
The danishes, cookies and tarts are good value and very fresh. A nice shop to sit in with a coffee, pastry and the paper. There are places of equal quality for birthday cakes in Hayward but for a quick, fresh croissant and a coffee this is it in CV.
Just tried this place over in the Castro Village today and it's a winner. Fresh ingredients, nice flavors, good service and good prices. The sauces are delicious. Loads of vegetarian options. Any curry can be made with fried tofu as the "meat" including all but one appetizer. We had the garlic and pepper curry over fried tofu and a cashew nut sauce over tofu. The spring rolls were tasty.
We later went back and had the Vegetarian Delight (scrumptious sauce) and the Yellow Curry (also excellent). The tofu satay skewers were a triumph.
I am so pleased to have this place in CV. We needed a good Thai place to show the other ones how it's done.
Small, with ever-dwindling child-care hours, older equipment and it's incredibly crowded at peak hours. By the time the place empties out the child-care is closed. So useless if you have kids. The Bayfair location is superior in size, child-care and equipment though I have never worked up the nerve to use the pool and spa there. None of these places is clean enough for me. Case in point the menstrual blood I found on the seats of some of the weight machines at both places. Ick! Bring a towel.
There is nothing here you can't get elsewhere cheaper. If you live on ready-meals and junk-food then consider the convenience food over at Trader Joe's just up the road. Any of which will have fewer ingredients and cost half the price of something at Safeway. Safeway lost my business 2 years ago when I realised it costs twice to three times as much to get a week's worth of groceries. PW Market also has a very nice selection and the even the prices there are better.

I struggled to find a good preschool in CV that fit my work schedule and which had a reasonable level of education rather than just day care. This place fit the bill but as a secular family we did struggle with the religious component of the curriculum. Overall this place gave my child a great start and my child developed a very strong attachment to the caring and professional staff. I would recommend them based upon their professionalism. Wish there was a non-churchy alternative in CV that is NOT Montessori.
Great place to get your car washed or your oil changed. Excellent service. Reasonable prices. A bit of a local institution. They will also steam clean your carpets. I highly recommend.
This place made eating in CV a whole lot nicer from the minute it opened. Great selection, very low prices and high quality ingredients in even their most convenient frozen foods. They might not always have what you are looking for but you can live very well on what they do have. Professional, helpful and courteous staff. The parking lot is small and often full but you can't blame people for shopping at the only place in town where you can get a week's worth of mostly organic groceries for around $100. Try doing that at Safeway or Albertson's. The booze selection, especially the beers, is excellent. A very nice place to pick up a gift in the floral area. The orchids are lovely and the prices are better than any florist's.
