Chef Shop
I cook quite a bit and was delighted to find a shop with so different amenities for cooking in my hometown. If you need it for cooking or baking, they carry it AND they display it in a beautiful, tasteful manner. Much better than schlepping down to Williams Sonoma at the Hillsdale Mall or ordering online. I can get my baking/cooking needs fix here on the spot.
John Trombulack Landscaping
John is a reliable and responsible landscaper who can provide more than your average mow and blow and reasonable rates. He is very good at pruning and knowledgable about what plants grow well in this area. Easy to talk to.
Calif Landscaping Maintenance
We had some work done by California Landscaping Maintenance a few years back. They put in a patio and did some other more minor hardscaping projects for us. I found them to be reliable and responsible. We had one problem but the owner quickly fixed it and went out of his way to smooth things over with us. The total cost was quite reasonable. I would use them again.
Foodville Market
Foodville is, for now, the only grocery store located in downtown San Carlos - which makes it convenient for us locals - in other words, we have no choice but to shop here. I've been pleasantly surprised, however, by Foodville's selection of high quality, organic and other upscale food. Their deli is also quite good and makes a decent sandwich. Even the produce is not half bad - some organic and most of it fresh. Foodville has definitely made the best of their cramped (and, I'm afraid, dirty) quarters.
Vivace Restaurant
Vivace's, located across from the Carlmont Shopping Center, has been in Belmont forever and rightly so. It is consistently good Italian food. It is a bustling little restaurant and you'll likely want a reservation if you are going at a peak time. The food is not world class but it is always enjoyable.
Appliance Depot Parts
Appliance Depot has been a fixture in San Carlos for a while and I went there at the recommendation of a satisfied friend. They carried the hard-ish to find items I was looking for and were friendly when I purchased them. I ended up having to wait a month longer than I was quoted for my new washer/dryer and therefore had no washer/dryer in our new house for the same period of time. When I called to inquire, the staff would give me vague answers about the location of my washer/dryer and the timing for its delivery. It finally arrived and was installed but without a single apology or other compensation from Appliance Depot.
Gaffigan Company
We used Gaffigan on two occasions - the second because they were so good the first time. We had them replace a heater and all the duct work in our house. They were professional, reliable, responsible and very fairly priced.
Hallmark Roofing Inc
We used Hallmark Roofing to replace our roof a couple of years ago. They are fantastic - about half the price of the other bids we received and so fast. They showed up with a big crew and ripped off the old roof, replacing with a nice new one in less than three days. Their staff was professional, communicative and friendly.
Dona's Hallmark Shop
This is a great local Hallmark store, featuring aisles of the usual Hallmark cards and wrapping paper and, at Christmas time, all the Hallmark ornaments. The size of this store, however, sets it apart from other Hallmark stores because they can carry so much more than just cards and a few nick nacks. They have tons of stickers (great for the kids), a back room with some kid-oriented goodies and great seasonal items.
Anitas Gifts and Things
Anita's has the best fudge in town! Okay, it's the only fudge shop in San Carlos but it is really really good! The owner is very creative, always trying different mixtures of fudge. He's also extremely generous, offering my kids free candy all the time, and super friendly. Anita's also stocks loads of different candy - fine chocolates as well as old fashioned hard and gummi candies in jars for the kids. They carry some interesting gift items as well as cards. Anita's is best known for it's gift baskets - oh well, I've only tried the fudge. :)
