Regarding the long wait: make an appointment! Otherwise, before holidays, on Friday afternoons, most Saturdays, etc., you're going to have a long wait-30 minutes to an hour. My rating, below, is based on price; at 16 bucks or whatever it's a 5 star. If it were thirty, I'd give it maybe 2-3 stars. You get what you pay for.
I don't know what the dissatisfied reviewer's other gym experiences have been, but I've been going to gyms and health clubs for 35 years now and I will just say this: 1) you have no idea what noisy is until you're incessantly commanded to buy stuff over the high-powered intercom at a 24hr fitness club, 2) the other phrase for "always under construction" is "actually maintained," and, again, you have no idea what "difficult to quit" is until you've tried opting out of a for-profit gym.
On the contrary, I love this Y because if you want to be left alone, they'll do that and if you want to socialize, the gym members are genuinely friendly--not snobby about money or muscles, which can't generally be said about the gym experience. I also love the diversity--CEO's work out here, as do roofers, students, housewives, Mike Tyson (Yes!), police and fireman, glamourous U. Conn women's basketball players when they're in town and more than one film composer.
