San Francisco, CA
I had read the reviews online before I went, but called Cigna (my insurance) to find out if I could change and there was going to be a one month waiting period before I could change, so I just went ahead. Went in for Xrays, and a consult.
Should have been suspicious by the forms they make you fill out...asking multiple questions like "do you own or rent your home and for how long, etc. (why do you care, you are my dentist)...
Anyway, they recommended deep cleaning, just like the other guy said in another review. The anticipated bill was super expensive, like 1105, with only 400 covered by insurance. They tried to get me to sign a piece of paper before I left saying I would accept the charge/treatment. Yeah, right. Thanks but no thanks.
This didn't sound right so I called my insurance and was told that the MAX I would have to pay for this kind of service was $240, not 600-700. I called Van Ness back to tell them there must have been some sort of mistake...they told me there was this other charge for "irrigation". No explanation of what that was, and a search on Cigna came up with nothing that fit that description. Maybe its the "magic bacterial rinse" the other reviewer mentioned, I have no idea. In any case, its not covered. Furthermore, they never indicated it was optional.
I decided to switch dentists; not sure what was going on here, but since there were other poor reviews on this site, I decided not to take the risk. I told them I wanted my Xrays (the implication being I would be going elsewhere); they tried to charge me $25 for those. Called Cigna again, found out that they couldn't charge me for something Cigna was paying for already; they finally relented.
My advice to all you guys out there, just keep switching until you find someone who is willing to explain charges, and certainly double check whether charges are covered before you commit to them.
Best of luck!
