Roy's Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine
It's all about the Butterfish at Roy's. Very attentive and friendly service. Misoyaki butterfish is awesome. Everything else is good to very good. Decent atmosphere but at 2nd and mission it's kind of a dead area in the evening. With so many great original or one of a kind restaurants in San Francisco it's hard to go here over them. If you're in this neighborhood go a few more blocks down the street to Town Hall.
Harley Farms Goat Dairy
Today we took a trip out to Pescadero and stopped at Harley Farms with our 7 and 4 year old. Great place to slow down and enjoy the mellower things. Including the awesome tasting room where you can try about 10 different goat cheeses. You can call ahead and sign up for the full-on tour if you'd like to see the whole operation - and let the kids have a chance to get out in the field and pet the goats. Be sure to check out the incredibly cool hay-loft which they do up for wedding dinners and rehearsals. Totally cool.
Saffron Indian Bistro
We love the folks at Saffron Bistro. The food is delicious, they deliver & they are keep all your address and credit card on file to make ordering easy. Really great samosa and chicken tikki masalla. Good for lunch too.
Greek Theater
What a fantastic place to see an outdoor concert in the summer. Just saw Adele there last night - my first time at the Greek Theater. There really is not a bad seat in the house thanks to the amphitheater design. Acoustics were great. Gets chilly after sundown. The most important thing to know about this place is that the seats are concrete slabs with no back rest. I strongly suggest bringing a seat cushion, or better yet one of those crazy creek chairs with a back to make the event more comfortable.
Larry's Baby Safety Svc
Larry's the guy that every new parent on the peninsula calls to "baby proof" their house before their first child is born. He comes in, tell you what you need and how much it'll cost. If you give him the green light, he then goes ahead and installs everything (from child safety cabinet locks to gates that block the stairs to child safe outlets and closets etc..). He is full service from consultant to provider of equipment to installer. He's good. Prepare yourself - he likes to gab. He has many "Larry's first lesson of parenting" stories. He's a funny guy.
Wegman's Nursery
Every March I go to Wegman's to stock up on seeds, heirloom tomato plants, bumper crop and the like to plant my garden. Through trial and error over the years I've found i have more success with heirloom tomatoes from Wegmans more than I do Home Depot or other nurseries. They also tend to have pretty rare stuff. After having some "watermelon radishes" on a salad at Copa in San Mateo, I went looking for watermelon radish seeds and found them at Wegmans. They are usually able to answer any questions I've got.
Zuppa
Today for lunch the office mates and I wandered down to Zuppa for lunch. It is now my go-to, "hardy bowl of pasta for lunch" place. I had the pork ragu which was really simply and yummy. Triangular tube pasta with a nice spring to it as you ate. Really good and only $11. I'll be back.
Locanda Positano
Locanda Positano specializes in Italian fare from the Amalfi Coast. Great food, wonderful homemade pastas - very authentic. They are the sister restaurant of Acquapazza in San Mateo which is also fantastic. For food and service it's 5 star. Only reason I gave the overall rating of 4 stars is that it's incredibly loud and difficult to have conversation. High ceilings and stone floor. The owners are aware of this and may have already done something about the acoustics to bring the din down. We will go back though - the food is that good.
El Capitan
Had dinner here on a Thursday night with two friends from work. Crowd picked up around 7-8pm as people moved across the street from brainwash. Hand cut pasta with soft egg on top was yummy. Friend had bone marrow and approved. Ordered just the praline filled beignets for dessert (no shake with olive oil) and enjoyed. Were able to have a good discussion over dinner.
Calafia Cafe
We've become fairly regular visitors to Calafia for Sunday night dinners. Noisy and casual enough to not worry about our two young kids making too much noise, yet really tasty food that leaves you with a "healthy" feeling. The super salad with kale and qinoa is really good. Shaking beef salad and maple salmon are standouts too. We've found that if you go later than 6:00 you can end up waiting quite a while for a table - so we go early. Leaves plenty of time to stop at Cold Stone for dessert afterwards.
