La Mesa, CA
Walking into this place feels like coming home to a home cooked meal. The rueben is outstanding. I'm not a huge fan of rye bread. Unless it's the good stuff I won't eat it. Needless to say there was nary a crumb left on the plate when I got through with it. I recommend this place especially to the lunch crowd. The prices are right and the service is quick and efficient.
Ok, they make great, old fashioned burgers. If you are looking for fancy gourmet burgers with goat cheese and mango salsa you're an idiot and go somewhere else. If on the other hand you are looking for a great classic burger, this is the place. They are big, greasy, and wonderful. The buns are buttered and grilled right there next to the burgers and believe me, that makes a huge difference. The onion rings come frozen from a bag but they are the best frozen onion rings that I have ever had so no complaints here. Go on Monday nights for the $5.99 cheeseburger and fries special, it's a great deal. The Sunday only NY Streak is a great deal as well and grilled to perfection.
The service can sometimes be a little slow but that is only because they are very attentive with every customer and generally the service is adequate even at the busiest times.
Honestly, if you don't like this place there is either something wrong with you or you have some pretty unrealistic expectations.
I've been to Dick's place several times. I can't go four stars because the drinks are fairly overpriced. (I know, all the drinks downtown are overpriced. That's why I wouldn't give any of the places downtown more than four stars.)
Ok, back to Dick's. The atmosphere is great. People that go to Dick's are there to have a good time and that is generally what you get. If you are going to Dick's for the first time be ready to be seated at a big table with a bunch of people you don't know and having napkins wadded up and thrown at you.
Re the food, it's good. It's not great, but it's good. Better than I would normally expect in this type of setting. Dont' be an idiot, If you are looking for gourmet go down the street. This is a bar first and a restaurant second.
The service IS slow. Again, what do you expect? This place is always jammed with a couple hundred rowdy beer swilling napkin throwing revelers so getting a drink or a meal can take a while. Do your self a favor, order your drinks two at a time, or get off your lazy butt, walk to the bar and order one from the bartender. Half the fun of this place is getting up and mixing with the clientele anyway.
The food is good enough, the service is good enough, but the atmosphere absolutely makes up for both and allows me to give four stars.
Not only were they nice, friendly, prompt, and courteous, they're prices are very good even on a rush delivery. Highest possible recommendation! Use this shop and you will not be disappointed!
