Rusty's Pizza Parlor
Rusty's Pizza headquarters is based in Santa Barbara, CA. However, my family has enjoyed their pizza locally for nearly 20 years. In addition to their delicious traditional thin or pan crust pizzas, Rusty's also offers green salads; mojo potato wedges; fried chicken; buffalo wings; meatball sandwiches; and most recently garlic cheese bread. We have never been disappointed in the quality of food from Rusty's, and their delivery drivers are always courteous & friendly. Their prices are quite comparable to other local pizza parlors. Very highly recommended!
Pet Food Express
Pet Food Express is what the big box stores only wish they could be! I had the pleasure of shopping at Pet Food Express while in Lafayette for a dog seminar. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable; the store is impeccably clean; the isles are neatly organized with well-stocked shelves. A pair of very well-mannered employee-owned Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers were quietly lounging in an exercise pen in the center of the store. Being a localized chain of stores, Pet Food Express carries brands of superior pet foods who refuse to sell-out to the big box stores. Highly recommended! Bay area locals are certainly lucky to have Pet Food Express.

Pet House
Pet House is a local gem located in Goleta, CA. They carry high-quality supplies for aquatic pets, small animals, cats and dogs. The store is well-stocked, clean and the employees are friendly & helpful. They carry premium brands which refuse to sell to the big box chain stores. Be sure to check out the line of Timberwolf brand collars & leashes. The nylon is buttery soft, very easy on your hands but equally as durable.
Big Sky Cafe
During a visit to friends living in SLO, we had breakfast at Big Sky Cafe. It is one of their local favorites, but the first time for me. The decor is fun, artsy and colorful. The menu offers a wide variety of unique selections at modest prices for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I opted for a pretty standard breakfast, the service was prompt & the food was delicious. I would absolutely dine at Big Sky Cafe again, and recommend it to others who happen to be in SLO!
Dog Adoption & Welfare Group
DAWG (dog adoption & welfare group) is a wonderful non-profit shelter located in Santa Barbara County. DAWG rescues and rehabilitates high-risk dogs from Santa Barbara county animal control shelters. That is, dogs who are slated to be euthanized but are still adoptable. Volunteers work with the dogs to rehabilitate and socialize the dogs to aide in finding them a forever home. I volunteered at DAWG in 2005, and found it very rewarding to see 4 of the dogs I worked with find new homes while I was there.
Pleasant Inn
We stayed at The Pleasant Inn in 2005. Not only is the motel pet-friendly, but there are also two resident canines. Australian Shepherds Latte & Barkley are the motel's unofficial greeters, and dog biscuits are available in the lobby for resident canines & visitors alike. The motel is situated just one block from The Embarcadero, seating is available to sit outside your room and watch sunsets/sunrises over the bay and Morro Rock. Coffee pots are included in the rooms as well as color TVs, but there are no in-room telephones. Almost everyone carries a cell phone nowadays, so it's not a major inconvenience. I would gladly stay at The Pleasant Inn again in a heartbeat!
Paws On Main
I first discovered Paws On Main while on vacation in 1996. What the shop lacks in square footage, it makes up for with floor to ceiling displays of creative rubber stamps! The stamps are in sections according to theme: cats, dogs, people, scenery, holidays, words, wildlife, pop culture, backgrounds & borders, and more! There are also supplies such as quality brands of ink pads, embossing powders, brayers, embossing tools, and rubber stamping publications. The inventory is constantly rotated, so there's always something new each visit!
Tails
While on a visit to friends living in SLO, we stopped by Tails to purchase Nature's Variety dog food for their Silken Windhounds. It was my first time in Tails, and I was quite impressed! Although not a large store, Tails carries a nice selection of high quality items for both cats & dogs. In addition to Nature's Variety, they carry other premium brands of pet food which do not sell to big chain stores; such as Innova and Canidae. From carpeted cat trees to martingale collars for sighthounds, Tails has something for pets of all sizes. A definite must-see whenever you're in lovely San Luis Obispo!
Someplace New
A bit off the beaten path of Cambria's Main Street is Someplace New.... And it is some place worth visiting! The shop carries a unique selection of collectibles, home decor, wonderful gift ideas, and just plain fun items! Their inventory changes with the seasons, so there's always someTHING new at Someplace New. Be sure to stop by when you visit Cambria!
