Bay Area Overhead Door Company Incorporated

I found Bay Area Overhead to be a totally irresponsible and dishonest service provider.
They installed my garage door opener recently, contracted through Home Depot service installation. The installer was careless in his work in general. To top it off, he broke the hinges in a plastic cover of a part when he rip it apart. He tried to hide that, until I noticed that the cover was lying loose. He tried to spin his way out of it, which I shouldn't have listened to. Later I realize the significance of the broken piece, and called Bay Area Overhead the next day to get it fixed. It then got worse... they now even try to lie that the part was already broken inside the sealed bag, and that the installer had informed me before he installed it. That is an absolute lie.

At this point, the problem with Bay Area Overhead is beyond having a broken part, which was fine out of the box. They are dishonest, basically refused to admit any responsibility, and have very bad attitude in addressing a customer's complaint. If you don't want to be stuck with no recourse, when their careless installer breaks your brand-new parts, avoid them like a plague.

Hortus Landscaping

I just had a small landscape project completed by Hortus in my front yard. It mainly involves building a small dry-stack stone wall and back fill with top soil. I'm in general quite happy with the outcome. I did have to monitor their progress, and gave specific instructions to the crew.
Note that they seem to have a hugh backlog for small jobs. When I first got the quote, the contractor did tell me that he doesn't know when he can get the job scheduled. It turns out that it took 3 months wait for the job. Once it was finally scheduled, a crew of 2 showed up on time and got the job done within half-a-day.

Smog Express Test Center

Belmont, CA Car Emissions Testing & Smog Checks 06/07/07: 'Friendly Services Smog Test-only Center'

I'd taken my 2 cars to this place the last 3 years for the DMV registration smog check. The people there are friendly and helpful. One of my cars had failed test, and Ray the main guy there took the time to point out that all it needed was to replace a hose. Sure enough, after having my mechanic replaced the hose, the car passed the re-test. This had no doubt saved us the cost of labor to have our mechanics do their own diagnostic.

With a coupon, they charge about $50, plus the certificate fee. They do not charge the extra 2 bucks for EFT that some smog centers do. I suspect if you ask, you don't really need to show them a coupon to get the discount. There are other smog test-only centers that advertise for a slightly lower price. I prefer to take mine here because of their good services.

Bob & Kevin's Svc

San Carlos, CA Car Brake Repair - San Carlos, CA Auto Repair 05/31/07: 'Honest and Professional'

I too was referred to Bob & Kevin's by Nielsen, due to their long wait for an appointment. My car couldn't start. Bob's initial estimate was that it could be due to a bad starter, and would cost $400+ to replace. They later found that it was due to a couple of bad relays in the starting system, and I was charged less than $300 for parts and labor.
Some other shops would have replaced the starter motor and charged me for it anyway. Here, they are honest and charged for the real problem, which was less than the initial estimate.
