Cascal

Mountain View, CA Mexican Restaurants 07/07/08: 'Disgusting'

I went there once, and it was some of the worst food I've ever had. The gazpacho was disgusting, so bad that I had them take it back, and I've never had to do that before. We sampled many dishes, and all of it was disappointing. We talked to the couple next to us and they didn't like what they ordered either. The servings are very small and expensive. I've had good tapas before, and this was not it.

Sonny Cafe

San Jose, CA Cafes 07/07/08: 'Fresh, flavorful Vietnamese food'

I've only been there once, but I was impressed with the food, and will return. We were the only people in the place on a Sunday evening, so the person there (maybe the owner), turned the radio to a light-rock station thinking we would like that more than the Vietnamese vocals. We thought that was considerate. The deep-friend Imperial Rolls were excellent! My BBQ pork and prawns over rice was flavorful and a good-sized serving. My friend's vermicelli pho with chicken was fresh and satisfying. The bill was only about $25 for the two of us, including Thai iced teas.

Pete's Family Restaurant

San Jose, CA Pizza Restaurants 07/07/08: 'Yummy large portions'

I've only been here once, but I was impressed with the food and will return. My Alfredo pasta was a huge portion with a generous assortment of grilled chicken, sausage, and prawns in a rich delicious sauce. My friend's lasagna was also large, delicious, and savory. The food was well worth the price, and the left-overs were enough for lunch the next day. Everyone was friendly, including someone (maybe the owner) who thanked us and wished us well as we were leaving. My only minor complaint is that there were a lot of regulars hanging out around the video poker machine at the bar talking loudly. They weren't too bad, but I'll probably ask to sit further away from the bar area next time.

Vista Park Family Optometry

San Jose, CA Optometrists 07/07/08: 'Kind and patient eye doctor'

I've been going to Dr. Park for about 10 years, and I've always been very happy with his service and professionalism. He is very kind and always takes the time to answer my questions in detail. It's been easy to get appointments with him for the same or next day, and he's open on weekends. My only minor complaint is that he has a medium-sized selection of frames in the store and not as big as some of the chain optometrists.

Thanh Kelly - Vista Park Dental Care

San Jose, CA Dentists - General Dentists 07/07/08: 'Might try to scam you'

I went to this dentist (Dr. Kelly) for a few years only because she was a nice lady and her office was close to where I lived. I quit going because she kept pressuring me to get expensive and painful treatments that I didn't need (I consulted with a couple of other dentists to verify this). A friend of mine went to her and said she told him the same thing, that he need a "deep cleaning" to get rid of the Gingivitis that he did not have. Apparently this is a very common scam that dentists do to get patients to spend more time in their chairs.

Robertsville Barber Shop

San Jose, CA Barbers 05/09/08: 'Good old-time Barber'

This is a manly man's barber shop. They will cut women's hair, but I've never seen a woman in the place (except for one of the barbers). They don't bother you with shampoos and don't try to sell you hair products. Haircuts are $16, but I always give them an even $20, which makes them a little more expensive than SuperCuts. I usually go early in the morning before work so I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes (and of course you don't need to make an appointment). All of the barbers I've experienced are friendly and efficient. This is a good place to talk about local sports or your family or just watch the TV (though most of the time I've been there they had the TV on "The View" or "Ellen", which kind of weakens the mainly atmosphere). My only complaint is that they don't offer facial shaves (but they will razor shave your sideburns and back of the neck).

Casa Teresa

San Jose, CA Fast Food/Take Out 02/11/08: 'Basic but delicious'

I get a craving for Casa Teresa every couple of weeks. The food is terrific for the price. The ground beef burritos have an excellent savory flavor. The chicken tacos burst with flavor. The guacamole is fresh and delicious. The owner is always friendly and welcoming. This is much better Mexican food than the chain restaurants.

Siena Bistro

San Jose, CA French Restaurants 02/11/08: 'Decent food, but noisy and small'

This is a very small, very noisy restaurant. We requested a romantic table, but they don't have any. The tables are arranged in a big half circle around the bar area. There is only about 6 inches separating your table from the ones to the left and right, so you had better hope your neighbors are friendly. I had to ask the people next to us to move their table so I could get out. Service was friendly. The food was expensive for the quality. It was good, but not great, and definitely not gourmet. I would only go back there again if I had a coupon.

Comedy Sportz

Santa Clara, CA Bars & Clubs 01/14/08: 'The best live comedy in the Bay Area'

My friends and I see a ComedySportz show about once a month since the shows are always different, and we always enjoy them. They have never been anything less than laugh-out-loud funny, and it's amazing what they can come up with on the spot. Note that the show has has nothing to do with sports. It's just two teams playing improvisational games with a "referee" who keeps score. The audience gets to suggest ideas for the games and vote on which team wins each round. The shows are great for families (since there is no "naughty" language), but I think a kid would need to be at least 7 to understand it. Tickets are only $15 for adults and $12 for students/children. There is no food or beverage minimum like most comedy clubs. They have a full cafe that serves soda, coffee, beer, wine, salads, sandwiches, and snack food, so you can hang out there before the show. They've changed locations a couple of times in the last few years, but now they are in the Camera 3 theater near San Jose State. Their nice new theater has good sound and lighting, new comfy chairs with cup holders, and a custom-built elevated stage so there are no bad seats in the house. Most of the time you can walk up to the door and get seats, but I recommend buying tickets on their website in advance if you have a group of people or it's a special show (it also makes checking in at the ticket area much faster). Also on Friday nights if you see the first show, you can stay around and see the second show (they call it the "Midnight Show") for free!
