Geisha House
Aside from the fantastic 'aura' of the place (blood red building on Hollywood Blvd), it has very great sushi. Their spins on traditional takes makes for a refreshing experience. Great for a gals night out. The main dining area is open air, so bring a sweater.
Great place!
Studio H
Heidi is incredible. I followed her here from her prior salon. She is always professional, up to date with edgy and fashion forward haircuts. She consistently delivers above expectations, and created a fabulous haircut that I have received so many compliments on! I have naturally curly hair, and she is an ace with it.
Stylized Hair Designs Plus
Having just moved from LA I was naturally a bit anxious about getting my first haircut in Anchorage. I ran into a woman with a fabulous haircut at Nordstrom, and she gave me the name and number of this place and the stylist (and owner) Sam. I have also heard good things about his other stylist, Wendy.
I have curly hair and he managed to cut a very stylish asymmetrical bob that was a dream. He spent time, did not rush, and has a good approach.
Total bill- $37. A steal considering what I am used to!
I will be going back.... I think now that he knows my hair I can go a bit more edgy with my lines.. :)
Long House Alaskan Hotel
Admittedly, it was last minute and we were somewhat desperate for lodging. We also had a pet. I am told that the experience for people with pets vs those without is considerably different.
However, staying in the 2nd building, 2nd floor was awful. Old room, and we found as above-- a condom wrapper under our bed and our bathroom seemed like it might have been cleaned weeks ago. We slept on top of our sheets, and got up promptly the next morning. Took a shower in flip-flops. So if you are traveling with a pet. I would suggest going elsewhere.
(stay in June 2008)
Go Dog La
My husband and I found this on a whim and have loved it. It is a huge indoor/outdoor area and is divided for small dogs and big dogs. Our little guy always comes home happy, and best of all tired!
There is someone there 24/7. At night, they bring down additional pillows and beds for the dogs to sleep on. They also have ramps, couches, a t.v. area and as I mentioned, an outdoor fenced-in play area as well.
It is a good price, especially for boarding. We never feel guilty about leaving him because we know he is well taken care of, the staff know him personally, and everyone genuinely cares! We will truly miss this place when we go out of the area!
Hogly-Wogly Dr Tyler Tex Bbq
I am SO happy we came onto this website to look up BBQ in the area. We were very satisfied with our experience here last evening. The waitresses were very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. The brisket was to die for, and my husband loved both that and the beef ribs.
The sides were small, but flavorful. Plus, the focus here seems to be on the huge portions of meat. For me, I could only finish half of my plate and half of my sides.... so not a problem at all.
If you have a huge appetite and like good BBQ, this is a great place. No frills-- clean, nice and straight to the point--- the food!
Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill
The ambiance, great. But when you order the 'signature dish' (in this case, their tri-tip) one expects it to be more meat than fat. Both my husband and I were disappointed to find that more than the usual fat was attached to ours. So while it was very tasty, it wasn't really a lot for what you were paying for.
I guess a good way to get around this is to order the tri-tip sandwich and skip the dinner portion. Far less coin, and most likely just as much in the meat department.
Beauty Box
I cannot say enough good things about Heidi. I came in with an idea, and she gave me feedback and options for how to change it to become edgier. I walked out with an asymmetrical bob that I love! I feel like a walking art-piece. Fery chic and easy to care for with her tips and tricks.
I have naturally curly hair and she is also very knowledgable about that/flat ironing/care, etc.
Inner Power Yoga Studio
Wonderful studio. Great instructors with a variety of approaches. The studio itself is also smaller.... so you usually have under 30 people in each class. I like the intimate feel of that and the individual attention it yields. My favorite classes are Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. and Thursdays at 6:15. They seem to have a very open schedule so that you have a lot of flexibility.
Would highly recommend for the seasoned Yogi and beginner alike. Come about 10 minutes early for the class--- some fill up quickly!
Busboys & Poets
While one location is in DC, there is another in Shirlington village in Arlington.
The food is wonderful--- many vegetarian and vegan options as well as something for the omnivores as well. The menu contains so many different options, it is hard to choose.
Great drinks (the mango martini was insanely good!).
The ambiance of the place is intoxicating.
Check it out!
